For readers of Harlan Coben and Robert Crais, Robert McClure’s rollicking crime novel of family and felony takes readers on a relentless thrill ride through the L.A. underworld.
Fresh off a nine-year stint in San Quentin, career hitman Babe Crucci plans to finally go straight and enjoy all life has to offer—after he pulls one or two more jobs to shore up his retirement fund. More than anything, Babe is dead set on making up for lost time with his estranged son, Leo, who just so happens to be a rising star in the LAPD.
The road to reconciliation starts with tickets to a Dodgers game. But first, Leo needs a little help settling a beef over some gambling debts owed to a local mobster. This kind of thing is child’s play for Babe–until a sudden twist in the negotiations leads to a string of corpses and a titanic power shift in gangland politics. With the sins of his father piling up and dragging him down, Leo throws himself into the investigation of a young prostitute’s murder, a case that makes him some unlikely friends—and some brutally unpredictable enemies.
Caught up in a clash of crime lords, weaving past thugs with flamethrowers who expend lives like pocket change, Babe and Leo have one last chance to face the ghosts of their past—if they want to live long enough to see their future.
EX CON FOR DAD COP FOR A SON EQUALS TROUBLE
I received this book through NETGALLEY from the book PUBLISHER ABILI. In exchange for an honest opinion. This is Mismousey’ very honest opinion of the author- ROBERT MCCLURE’S – DEADLY LULLABY
Mismouey has never read any books that Mr. Mcclure has written before. But I do love a good crime thriller. And boy did this one sound like it!. The way in which the author wrote the bio for the book-he had me hooked. And I do mean it – picture it a mouse going for cheese (hehe).
The way in which he takes pen to paper to create such a DRAMATIC -COMPELLING- EDGE OF YOUR SEAT/PAGE TURNER! Is truly GENIUS! From the very first page -he hold you captive. You have this DESIRE-NEED-WANT -CRAVING to keep reading till the end. As you HAVE to know what happens next. You will find yourself being pulled into the book deeper and deeper till the end.
DEADLY LULLABY is about a LAPD Police Detective by the name of Leo Crucci. He goes by the name of Crooch. As our story opens Crooch just found out his father is now out from the pen- Babe. Babe has done 7 years for a crime. He still has connections with his mobster friends. Even though he wants to get out of the business. As for his son Crooch – he has a gambling problem.
Babe gets asked to do a job and bring his son Crooch and Chief along to help him out with it. They are to take out Mackey. Which Babe does not tell his son about – he lets him think he wants get Mackey to help him out. So they go to Mackey place for a convo. Instead when they are alone Babe breaks his neck. Crooch is a witness to the murder. Now he is on the payroll for Joe Sacci. Well actually for his father- but Sacci ordered the hit.
Mackey goes missing along with his crew. His niece (Levitch) is looking for him for him -Mackey. she goes to The Venetian Social Club looking to collect the money Crooch owes along with info on where her uncle is. It doesn’t work – as he get’s the best of her and Latzo. Later when Crooch was off duty he got a call from his commander called him. Told him that he was needed at a scene of a dead body. All other available men where downtown on a scene on a torch job.
Crooch didn’t think nothing of it. He wasn’t expecting to be on duty as it was his off day. o he had a few drinks. Crooch drives to the scene- he finds a young Asian girl probably Cambodian dead. She had been strangled. Her age is approximately 18 or 19. There is no ID on her and no one knows who she is. The caller stated that a big black dude had taken off from inside the bushes and ran like crazy towards Wilshire. With a purse in his hand. All the officers on the scene with him are out chasing down the suspect and asking if anyone saw anything.
They catch the suspect -his name is Taquan Oliver. Crooch interviews him- and Oliver is throwing off classic signs that he killed her. Oliver gives his statement but he also states he was stoned . He says he say a short fat guy with her. But Crooch doesn’t believe him.
Oliver is placed in jail- he has 2 other bunkies in his cell. During the night he hangs himself. No one saw anything – and the guards on duty didn’t think he was a risk for suicide. Hmm sounds fishy to me ….
Now as for our victim- we learn her name. She is Sonita Khemra- she has been living with her uncle Khang Nhou as her mother Phath Khemra could not control her. She thought that her brother could. He owns KN Imports it is also rumored that he is into drugs.
While our Detective is trying to solve the murder of Sonita- he is also doing his best to stay away from his father Babe. Not only that but Crooch and his father have issue between themselves. Does that work out for him? what actually happens with Sonita’s case? Who did murder her? Will Crooch be able to stay away from Babe and the mobsters? Does he keep his job? Are father and son able to finally let the past rest and start picking up the pieces?

Robert McClure read pulp fiction as a kid when he should have been studying, but ultimately cracked down enough to obtain a bachelor’s in criminology from Murray State University and a law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. His story “My Son” appeared in The Best American Mystery Stories, and he has had other works published in MudRock: Stories & Tales, Hardboiled, Thug Lit, and Plots with Guns.
DEADLY LULLABY, my first novel, published by Penguin-Random House on September 29, 2015, is an expansion of my short story “My Son.” Calmann-Lévy has purchased the French language rights to the book, Ikar has published the Slovakian rights and Euromedia the Czech rights.
