About The Author

frances stockton photo

My love for storytelling began in kindergarten when I created my first fictional characters. Though I’d given them simple nicknames, I’d convinced my family that Red Henry and Green Henry were identical twin brothers in my elementary school.

They were mischievous, rarely did their homework, had trouble with math and spelling, experienced heartbreaking losses, and yes, they even had girlfriends!

It wasn’t until the Henry twins mysteriously moved to a different state that my family realized that they were entirely fictitious and my mother suggested I write the stories down.

A few years later, I began to write, completing my first manuscript at age thirteen. I confess the heroine was a cross between Nancy Drew and a contemporary Laura Ingalls Wilder, who happened to be dating one of the Hardy Boys. But when I’d written ‘the end’ on the very last page, I’d known I had more stories to tell. Of course life intervened, but whether I was in high school, becoming part of a local theater and dance company, working as a Veterinary Technician, earning a degree in History and Secondary Education, or teaching, I was always writing and reading romances.

Finally, I met and married the love of my life and moved from Maryland to Massachusetts in 2001. Shortly after, I proudly joined Romance Writers of America and the New England Chapter, and I’ve been writing faithfully ever since. I love to hear from readers, connect with me through Facebook, Twitter or by email.

In The Series

Melody Beswick thought she was
bringing herself and her thirteen month old son home to his father. It was her
last ditch effort to make a better life for her and her boy. One in which Noah
had a father to look up to and guide him. While she knew Grinder wasn’t perfect,
she believed in him, and love always found a way, right?
Melody never thought her dreams for herself and her son could twist into such
nightmares, and that it was so true, the old adage, that the road to hell is
paved with good intentions. She’s about to find out that another adage is true,
that sometimes it’s better the devil you know, when instead of finding Grinder,
it’s his cold and critical brother Archer at the end of her long drive that she
must contend with.

With no other options, and no place else to go, Melody is about to make a deal
with this devil that she can’t refuse. Who knew it could, quite possibly, be
the best decision she’s ever made?

Rush had always been the brother that was the most up for adventure. Then Grinder died and he realized that it was time to slow down. Fast-forward by a year and more and his older brother Archer had found Mel. Hell, his own twin was with a woman of his own! Rush is starting to get restless again, which was just perfect. Cue a string of anonymous hook-ups and one night stands. It was enough to feed the restlessness for a while, then an adventure of sorts came a callin’ by way of the VP’s estranged aunt and the President’s sister-in-law.
Her daughter was in need of some kind of white knight, which Rush could care less about, but the white knight routine did come with a pretty big perk. It would mean that he got to go back to a job that had, once upon a time, felt like a calling.
Of course, nothing was ever easy where Rush was concerned, especially when he actually set eyes on the damsel in distress. One, she wasn’t some paper princess, and two, she definitely didn’t want him around. After all, one-night hook-ups were supposed to be just that… one and done.

Reckless, dangerous, and out of control; these are the words most often applied to the SHMC’s brother Duracell. Which is why no one can understand what the deal is between him and Blue. Blue is none of those things; if anything he’s quiet, shy, and as mild-mannered as they come. There’s no balance between these two yet they are inexplicably a team. Then Blue gets a single look at Hayley, and it’s all it takes for him to know she’s their third.

Is Hayley the woman for them? A match for Blue sure, but strong enough to withstand the bizarre tempest of Cell’s personality? The two MC brothers have set their sights on the waitress and have been patiently feeling her out. Now it’s time to take the next step and see if she’s indeed able to date the both of them.

She’ll either bring balance to the boys, or Cell’s pull will knock them all off balance and send them crashing, burning them all out before anything can even fully ignite.

Series Description:

Primani are soldiers with supernatural abilities granted by an archangel. They police demon activity that threatens humankind. Before becoming Primani, all were superior warriors (Celts, Huns, Vikings, etc.) with unique psychic abilities. The series follows them as they cross lines, fall in love, and butcher demons to save the world. Living by a loose code of morals, they’re more mercenaries than angels, prone to violence, vengeance, and in the end, sometimes, heartbreakingly pure love. The first three books follow Mica’s transformation from human to immortal after she becomes entangled in the Primani world. Each subsequent book focuses on the unique story of each Primani as they battle both Hell and their own inner demons. Often dark, funny, full of twists, and steamy passion, the Primani series crosses the lines of paranormal romance, metaphysical fantasy, and occult suspense.

About SJ McCoy

Hi, I’m SJ, a coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good red wines. I’m a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can’t write without coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered down the paths of non-fiction for many years. My life changed completely a few of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life. My favorite romances are happy escapes with a focus on fun, friendships and happily-ever-afters, just like the ones I write.

These days I live in beautiful Montana, the last best place. If I’m not reading or writing you’ll find me just down the road in the park – Yellowstone. I have deer, eagles and the occasional bear for company, and I like it that way :0)

Love’s Promise:  Excerpt from Chapter 2

Everything felt heavy when Kristina first awoke from the anesthesia. Her eyelashes almost seemed as if they’d been weighted down or glued to her cheeks. Her limbs were thick and prickled with numbness. Even breathing felt more laborious than it once had. Wasn’t this surgery supposed to have the opposite effect?

She struggled against the fatigue and opened her eyes, one after the other, in a slow, careful squint. She wanted to sit up but didn’t quite feel strong enough to do so. Maybe if she pushed down with her arms…

The movement tugged at the IV protruding silently from her arm. It didn’t hurt, but it felt icky nonetheless.

“Good morning, sleepy head,” a nearby nurse said. “I was just coming in to check on you. How do you feel?”

Heavy didn’t seem like the right response here, so Kristina murmured “groggy” instead.

The nurse chuckled and put a heartrate monitor on Kristina Rose’s fingertip. “Heart rate is good. How do you feel besides groggy? Any pain?”

Pain? Oh, yes. Surgery was supposed to hurt. But… Kristina felt absolutely fine. “I think maybe I’m too tired to hurt,” she guessed aloud.

“On a scale of one to ten?”

“Maybe two. A little like I’m hungry from not having eating all day, but nothing unbearable. I thought it would be a lot worse.”

“Well, now, why did you think that? Dr. Daniels is very good at what he does. In fact, you’ll hardly have any scars to show for it. That’s the power of laparoscopic these days. Anyway, your vitals all look great. Would you like me to invite your friends in? They’ve been waiting very patiently to see you.”

Friends? Kristina Rose had only been aware of Elise staking out the waiting room for her. Who else had come to see her? Maisie? Jennifer? Summer, maybe? She nodded, and the nurse left with her chart.

A moment later, Elise burst into the room holding tight to the string of a big, happy “It’s a Girl” balloon. “I’m so glad you’re finally up!” she said, bending down to hug her friend and taking the pain from a two straight to a four. “Oh, I hurt you, didn’t I? I’m so sorry. It’s just I’m very glad to see you. I—”

“You were worried I wouldn’t wake up.”

“I knew you were safe in the Lord’s hands, but I still worried. What would I do without you, Kris?” She shook her head and chuckled morosely.

“Is that for me?” Kristina pointed toward the pink Mylar balloon floating near the ceiling. “You know I didn’t have a baby, right?”

“I know, I know, but I had to get you something, and there weren’t an awful lot of choices in the hospital gift shop. I figured the balloon is light and pretty. It floats, which is kind of like flying, right? And, well, you’re about to take off in this new life and get a lot lighter, too, if I understand it right. So… yeah. Here.” She tied the string of the balloon to the side of Kristina’s bed.

“You were waiting for me to wake up for how long, and that was the best you could do?” Kristina laughed. “But thank you. It’s perfect.”

“Hi, Kristina Rose,” a third person said almost shyly. It was a voice she knew well, but not one she had expected to hear so soon after waking.

“Jeffrey, hi. Thank you so much for coming!” She tried to adjust herself in bed to at least find a more flattering position, but doing so tugged at the IV line again and sent her pain back up to a three after it had only just settled down from the hug with Elise.

Jeffrey came to her bedside and gave her a very light and gentle embrace, then handed her a popsicle still in its shiny, white wrapper. “The nurse wanted me to bring you this,” he explained. “It’s sugar free and will keep your throat from getting too dry.”

“I’m not really hungry,” she confessed.

But then Elise was all over her. “Missy, you better do what the nurse says if you want to get better soon. Need me to unwrap it for you?”

Kristina Rose rolled her eyes. “I think I can manage.” As instructed, she unwrapped the popsicle, which was grape, her favorite flavor since childhood. She took a tentative suck and smiled. “Thank you for bringing this, Jeffrey. It’s so refreshing right now and the sugar’s helping to wake me up a little more.”

“It’s sugar free, but you’re welcome.” He smiled, too.

Elise looked from Kristina to Jeffrey then back again, but said nothing.

“I’m happy you’re okay,” Jeffrey said, ignoring Elise’s quizzical glance. “I prayed for you all day. In fact, I was so distracted at       work that I even burned the toast. Mabel sent me here, said a cook who couldn’t even make toast was no good to her anyway.”

Kristina laughed. Had he really been so worried about her? She hated to cause him concern, but she also loved that he’d been thinking of her, that he was here.

“Do you mind if I just say a little prayer with you?” he asked. “It only feels right since I spent the whole day begging God to keep you safe. And he did, so now I need to say thank you.”

“I’ll just… go for a lap around the hall,” Elise announced, slipping out of the room.

“Can I?” Jeffrey asked again, his honey eyes appeared even brighter, his brown complexion even darker underneath the fluorescent lighting. Kristina nodded, and he lowered his lean, muscular frame down onto the edge of her bed then reached for her hands. Their hands and skin often brushed whenever she grabbed a plate of fresh cooked food to serve to their mutual customers or when they were working together to refill ketchup bottles or stock napkins. But all those brushes were casual, unintended, part of a day’s work. As his hands cupped around hers, she felt a small jolt as if her whole body was just now coming to life and shaking off the heaviness of the anesthesia. Like Elise’s balloon, she’d become light, was flying.

“Dear Lord…” Jeffrey began, but honestly, Kristina didn’t even hear the rest.

Excerpt from Chapter 13

An hour and a half later, they pulled up to a tiny wooden cabin seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Along the way, they’d chatted about the same types of things they’d also discussed with one another. The only thing that made it feel like a date was that they’d chosen to call it one and that Jeffrey occasionally reached over to hold her hand when the road in front of them was smooth and traffic sparse.

“Where are we?” she asked, stepping out into the cleanest air she’d ever tasted. Large hills rose up from the green earth, and a small lake shimmered nearby. “It’s so beautiful.”

“It’s my grandpa’s cabin,” Jeffrey explained as he opened the rear car door and allowed Toto to run free through the open landscape. “I look in on it every once in a while, ever since he and my grandma moved out to Colorado.” His eyes grew glossy with memories as he spoke.

“We used to spend a couple weeks out here every summer. I loved it, all that time with nature. No school work, no worrying. Just fresh air and family. You know…” He laughed and shook his head. “This is where I first learned to cook so many years ago. It’s like this place is where I could most be myself, where I would find myself whenever I started to feel lost. And lately I’ve felt that way a lot.”

She nodded along, understanding completely. She only wished she had a place like this to call her own. And the fact that Jeffrey had chosen to share his with her touched her deeply. She chewed the inside of her cheek, wondering how she could ever make an equally important gesture to Jeffrey when she had so little to offer.

Misreading her internal thoughts, Jeffrey blushed and hurried to explain himself. “Don’t worry, I promise to have you back by midnight. It’s why we left so early.”

“I love it,” she said on a sharp inhale. I love you, she almost felt herself adding, but it was far too soon for that. “Thank you for sharing it with me.”

“I want to share a lot of things with you, Kristina Rose. Mabel got me thinking when she talked about the small life she’d made for herself and how she loves it even though so many people strive for more out of theirs.”

Kristina Rose nodded. “Me too.”

“I realized something the other day while I was out walking Toto. Life doesn’t slow down, not ever, not unless you let it.” His handsome features twisted and grew dark. “My dad wants me to take over the pharmacy.”

“Is that what you want?” she asked, drawing nearer to comfort him.

Jeffrey shook his head and looked out at the lake. He grabbed Kristina’s hand and pulled her toward the gentle waters. “Everything I want…” he answered when they reached the shore. “Well, I already have it.”

Does that include me, too? Am I yours? She waited for him to say more.

“I’ve always wanted to be a cook. I’ve just never admitted it out loud. Who thinks that the after school job you get in tenth grade could one day end up their profession? And there’s something else I’ve known for a long time too but never had the courage to admit…”

Is this the moment I’ve been waiting for? Is this it? Kristina Rose pushed the anxious stream of thoughts aside and allowed herself to focus on the man pouring his heart out before her, the man who was a friend and also so much more than a friend.

“What is it?” she whispered as Jeffrey turned toward her and grabbed her other hand. They stood face to face, hands entwined.

He took a deep breath, and as he let it out, his smile grew and grew. “You.”

Kristina felt so happy in that moment that all her thoughts quieted. Finally, she allowed herself just to feel, to enjoy the present moment, to enjoy her dreams finally coming true.

His eyes glistened as he spoke, but they never turned away from her face. “Kristina Rose Maher, I’m crazy about you. And you know what I would like most in the whole entire world?”

She chewed the inside of her cheek and tried to hold back tears of bliss. “Yeah?”

“To kiss you again. To do it right this time.”

He brought his face in close to hers and when their lips were hardly an inch apart, he whispered, “May I?” His breath tickled, and it was all she could do to stop herself from leaping into his arms and stealing that kiss herself.

Instead, she said, “Yes, please.”

This time, neither pulled away until a very wet, very tired, and apparently very jealous Toto clobbered Jeffrey with a slobbery kiss of his own.

And this time Kristina Rose didn’t worry, didn’t wonder whether there would be more between her and Jeffrey. Because this time she trusted in God, trusted in him, and trusted in herself, too.

When I was 8, I began writing a story, first in my head, and later in my diary. The world I dreamed about was big and complex; filled with interesting creatures. When I turned 40, I tried to translate the story I’d lived with all those years to the page…and couldn’t. So I sought help. Romance Writers of America was the only group that said, “Come on in. We’ll help.” So, I started writing and learning and exploring the craft of writing. One day, when I’ve learned enough to write such a complicated story, I will write about the world that exists in my head.

Why do you write about Honorable Men, Brave Women, and a Healing Love?

I used to think I wrote about strong men and women. After all, some of the men in my stories are modeled after my husband, a former military guy, and the strongest man I know. But then I realized I write about characters that are healed by love. The characters I write about aren’t just mentally or physically strong, but brave and honorable and willing to do the right things, even if loving someone comes at a personal sacrifice.

What is your writing process?

Over the years my writing process has changed. When I first started, I plotted and plotted, making massive spreadsheets of every little detail. I knew everything I could about my characters and story before I began, but my books turned out stiff and emotionless. My process has evolved into a story structure outline, which works much better. Now, I write my first draft and focus on story structure and let my characters do what is natural. After I get the bones of the book down, I start several edit passes to deepen the emotions and add flavor to the book. Normally, before the book goes to an editor, I’ve done at least 4, maybe 5 passes of the book. After that, I work with content editor, line editor, and a proofreader to make sure I’m putting out the best book possible.

Have you won any awards for your writing?

Yes, actually. During my journey to write the best book possible, I’ve won several awards for three of my books. There is one book that has won an award that I don’t intend to publish. There are four other books also sitting in the archives of my computer. These, I call my practice books, and will remain in a folder to be looked at when I need to reflect on how far I’ve come on this writing journey.

How do you develop your characters?

Character development is the driving force in my writing process. I start with what the character fears the most, and then move onto the false belief that character has created to cope with that fear. Then I start building a growth arc to help that character resolve their fear through a healing love. After that, secondary characters are used to entice main characters to reflect, either by mirroring bad behavior or “calling out,” essentially creating a catalyst for change.

If you couldn’t read or write for a day, how would you spend your time?

I love spending time chatting with friends on Facebook or Twitter, or researching new words for my Word Wednesday posts. I also enjoy designing little notes for my quotes and sharing them on Pinterest. If my husband isn’t traveling for his job, I like spending time with him, playing with my four-legged fur babies, or exercising. Several times a year, I like to get away to explore, usually to international destinations. I enjoy experiencing new cultures, visiting museums, or studying the city architecture or landscapes. My favorite trips so far have been to Machu Picchu and Prague.

How do you come up with character names?

Don’t laugh…I usually just Google professional model names, or use an iPhone app called, Name Dice. Name selection is always hard because each character in a book needs to start with a different letter. In fact, in the book, Orphaned, I had a Rachelle and a Michelle in the book and beta readers kept getting confused so I had to change Michelle’s name to Caitlyn.

If I wanted to be a Beta Reader or one of your Advanced Readers, how do I sign up?

That’s an easy question. You sign up on the website http://www.LyzKelleysHeroes.com. All the information is available. I’ve created a VIP Club for those special members who provide feedback or leave reviews. In return, this special group is the first to see my covers, hear release news, and receive freebies. If readers have additional questions, they can always contact me. I am the human on the other end of that email, and will respond.

If you wrote a book about your life, what would it be called?

I love one-word titles for my books, so I would believe the book title would be, Determined. My husband always says I’m the most determined person he’s ever met.

What do you find the hardest about writing?

I think it’s the mental anguish that goes into the writing process. Each word, each sentence is a struggle to get right. Every day I push, push, push to get better, and then I get edits back or read a review and the person on the other end of the keyboard has just ripped my heart out and crushed it without even knowing how much their words hurt. Even so, I do appreciate the feedback. Feedback helps me get better. Over the years, I’ve gotten a much tougher skin, but there are days that are hard. For me, no actor, singer, artist, photographer, or anyone who is brave enough to share their creation with the world, will get a negative thought from me. I know what it takes to put myself out there. It’s hard, but there’s something in all creative types that compel artists to keep reaching for their nirvana.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given about writing, or life?

The best advice I’ve received was from my great-grandmother. She said: “Set your goals high. If you don’t, you will never know what you might have been capable of achieving.” And boy, did I set my goals high. When I first started writing my stories down, I figured it would take me two, maybe three years to write my book. Ten years later, I have my first viable project. Most writers will tell you that publishing is a marathon, not a sprint—a very accurate description.

If you could go back and change one thing about your writing journey, what would it have been?

Nothing. Each mistake I’ve learned from. I wouldn’t change a thing.

What advice do you wish someone would have given you before you started writing your first book?

Find your tribe. Find the people who will help you achieve your dream. Writing is a community effort. You need people who give you constructive feedback and help you to understand if the story in your head has translated well onto the page. You also need people who can make you laugh or pull you back from the edge of the cliff when something happens. There are so many things that can chip away at your confidence and create insecurities. Friends help provide the perspective you need to keep writing.

How would you describe your writing style?

When I was young, I used to love to write poems. I loved the struggle to find the right word that rhymed, and the beat of each line. Maybe, that’s why it takes me so long to write my novels. I still love using the English language to it’s fullest, and finding that perfect word to communicate exactly what the character is feeling. It’s what makes writing exciting, exhausting, and euphorically fun.

Bodhi’s Synful Mate

Iron Wolves Book 6

by Elle Boon

KARSYN STYLES… aka Syn is tired of waiting on the man she knows is her mate to claim her. She’s going to take matters into her own hands, even if that means teaching the stubborn wolf she’s more than just the alpha’s baby sister.

BODHI… has fought the feelings he has for the little wolf who’s supposed to be like a sister to him. Only the feelings she’s stirred in his body and heart are far from brotherly. He’s done everything in his power to keep her at a distance, even going against everything he and his wolf want, but nothing can tame either man or beast except the one female meant to be theirs.

Just when he is ready to claim his mate, Bodhi’s world is rocked as his past comes back with a vengeance. He wasn’t born a wolf, but turned when his family was slaughtered. He’d thought he was all alone in the human world, grateful for his wolven family, until one fateful encounter.

Syn sees the man she loves pulling away. Her heart can’t take another rejection, or seeing him turn to another female for the comfort only she should be giving him. She’ll do anything to show him they’re meant to be together.

Neither realize the danger lurking in the shadows as Bodhi’s past is more sinister than either realize. Can the Iron Wolves survive what’s coming next, or will what destroyed Bodhi’s past come back to do the same to their future?

Excerpt

The constant need to be filled by Bodhi seemed to have eased after their last violent lovemaking session against the wall. Staring at herself in the mirror of her bathroom, Syn touched one of the marks on her hips, shivering at the remembered feel of his possession. Holy fucking shit, Lyric didn’t mention it would be so intense when she mated. The thought of her best friend had her looking for her cell. She glanced at the clock, and quickly walked back into bedroom staring at her recently re-made bed. Each step was a reminder of Bodhi’s possession as she felt a slight twinge between her thighs. With her shifter abilities, if she was to shift to her wolf, and then back to human, all her injuries would be healed, but she was loathe to do so. Gah, she was so screwed.

She swiped across the screen and hit the button for Lyric. The ringtone her friend chose for herself, had her smiling as she waited.

“Hello, beotch. How’s the mating going?” Lyric asked.

Syn shook her head. “Oh, we’ve been fucking like bunnies, and then we fucked some more. Would you like all the down and dirty details?”

The sound of Lyric groaning, and Rowan yelling at her to take the phone off of speaker made Syn blush and look around for Bodhi. “Dang it you hussy, why didn’t you tell me you weren’t alone?”

Lyric’s laughing voice almost had Syn jumping into her truck, and racing over there to knock her best friend in the head.

“Oh Goddess, you should have seen Rowan’s face. Now that, is what we call free entertainment.” Lyric laughed some more, then stopped as she must’ve realized Syn wasn’t laughing with her. “Oh, hun, I’m sorry. You know I didn’t mean to upset you. Hell, I tell you everything, even when Rowan’s right in the room. He sort of knows everything anyways. He’s like Super-SEAL, or would that be WolfieSEAL? Shit, what is he anyway now?”

“Lyric, shut up. You’re gonna give me a headache. Rowan is…Rowan. Who is your mate? He’s an ex-SEAL but he’s also a shifter, so I guess he’s all that and a bag of chips. But, that doesn’t mean I want him privy to my sex life.”

Lyric sniffed, and Syn had the impression her best friend was actually wiping away real tears. “Are you crying? You can’t cry. You’re the one who fucked up.” Syn gentled her voice. Lyric never cried. “Do I need to come over there? Did Super-Wolfeal do something?”

“Wolfeal?” Lyric giggled.

“Yeah, I sort of came up with that. You know how Jenna and Kellen call the Cordell twins Wolpires, well Wolfeals. What do you think?”

“I’m totally gonna tell him his new nickname. Now, stop evading me, and spill. What did you and Bodhi talk about? I don’t need the dirty dirty, since I‘m a happily mated female, I kinda know what you do. Stick part A into slot A, B, or C.”

Syn pulled the phone away from her ear. “So you’re saying you allow Rowan to stick his dick into your vajayjay, your mouth and your…” she was cut off as Lyric screeched.

“Alright, that’s enough girl talk while I’m in residence, damn wolf hearing,” Rowan growled into the phone.

“Give me the phone back you big bully.”

“I’ll talk to you later, Lyric. Don’t let the big bad Wolfeal get the better of you. Offer up part C,” Syn said then hung up as Lyric squealed louder.

“You, Karsyn Styles, are a bad girl.” Bodhi leaned against the doorjamb.

He looked too damn good for her peace of mind, but she kept that to herself. Although the smirk on his face let her know he’d read her mind. His eyes, those green emerald fire ones, looked at her with such tenderness, making her sigh. “Well, you bring out the bad in me.”

Straightening, he strolled into the room. “I hate to leave you so soon, but I need to go talk with my sister, and Kellen. There’s a lot of unfinished business with her husband, and his family. We know Roberto wasn’t in residence, which means he’s still a threat.”

Fear skittered through her. “He knows where we are located.”

“Let him come here,” he growled, pacing away from her to stare out the window. “I saw some of the things he did to her.”

She didn’t need to ask who the her was. When they’d connected, and their mate link clicked into place, she’d seen his memories that he hadn’t blocked. She couldn’t imagine the hell Layla had endured, only hoped that Jenna could help ease some of it. “What’re you going to do?”

Bodhi sighed. “I’m going to hunt his ass down, and kill him. His entire family will die, if not by my hands, then by our pack. Kellen has given me his blessing as well as his assurance he wants to dismember them all slowly. He said Jenna was too lenient when she collapsed the home with the fuckers inside. I tend to agree with him.” He smiled grimly.

Syn remained silent. The need for vengeance was one she understood, but her gut told her it wasn’t going to be quite the easy task her mate thought. No, she didn’t doubt for a minute her mate was a badass, however, the man they were facing wasn’t an honorable man. She’d seen inside Layla’s memories, things she wondered if Bodhi had truly paid attention to, or if he’d been too disturbed to notice the little things.

“Go ahead, say what’s on your mind. I can see you have an opinion, and while I may not agree, I do value your wisdom.”

“It’s not my past to tell, but I suggest when you speak to your sister, you listen, and try not to freak the fuck out. She’s suffered enough without her brother going apeshit on her. Not that I think you’ll hurt her, but Layla is going to need you to stay calm while she tells you her tale.” Syn held up a finger. “If she opens up enough to tell you that is. If not, then when you look into her mind, really look.”

“What aren’t you telling me? What did you see that I missed?” Bodhi came to stand in front of her, his hands holding her by the shoulders.

“I’m telling you to keep your shit cool, and don’t be an ass.” If it was possible, he seemed to grow without shifting. Hell, his entire body appeared to vibrate.

“I hate fucking riddles, and I most certainly don’t like it when my mate won’t just give me the deets I need so I’m not walking into a minefield.” Blunt, that was what Bodhi was.

Syn shook her head. “As your mate, and Layla’s sister-in-law to be, I am giving you both my respect. What I saw through your mind, wasn’t a true vision of mine. It could be a distorted version, so back the fuck up off me.” Mate or not, her wolf came to the surface, ready to protect them.

“The Dominguez family are, and were, vicious from what I saw. Hell, I was too young to really know anything, other than my friend Berto wasn’t able to play on certain days because he was in trouble. What did I miss?” He closed his eyes for a couple minutes, then they opened wide. “From what I saw through my sister’s mind, they not only killed, but they enjoyed it. The killing and torturing. Her husband made her watch. He got off on it. Shit, that’s what you were trying to tell me. I missed it when I connected with Layla.” He stared down at her, his heartbeat throbbed visibly though the vein in his neck.

“Yeah, I’m sure there’s more.” She licked her lips.
