Gracelyn Riley married a firefighter and knew that came with risks. But she never imagined herself widowed in her early thirties with two children to care for on her own. Even though her marriage to Chad Riley had its difficulties, dealing with the last year without him has not been easy. Her brother-in-law, Matt, has been the rock that has kept her from collapsing or imploding.

As a fireman, Matt Riley had been at the scene when his brother, Chad, was killed. For the last year, Matt has suffered from survivor’s guilt and drank himself into oblivion. His sister-in-law, Gracelyn, supported him, lending him a shoulder to cry on. Her friendship has pulled him through time and time again until he finally sobered.

With the year anniversary of Chad’s death upon them, Gracelyn and Matt turn to each for support and comfort. What they didn’t expect was to realize that their feelings for each other go beyond the solid friendship they share. The whir of a vehicle engine and the squeal of tires pulling into his driveway caught his attention. Gracelyn’s Jeep Cherokee slammed to a halt. She pushed the door open, banged it shut, and marched up the driveway in her black, heeled boots.

“How dare you,” she spewed, strutting in his direction.

Her hips swayed in a tantalizing rhythm, mesmerizing him. He shook his head, trying to gather himself. Her long, chestnut waves flowed over her shoulders. Her blue eyes sparkled with fierceness and determination. For what, he didn’t know, but she looked gorgeous. The exhaustion that had consumed him a minute ago washed away with a new wave of sexual energy. Heat spread through him and settled in his groin, thickening his dick. Something about her had him hornier than a teenager whenever she was within view, even if she looked like she might knee him in the balls.

She’d definitely be the death of him.

“How could you embarrass me like that?” She halted just inside the garage, her hands on her hips, and her chin tilted up in defiance.

“Well, good evening to you, too.” The sarcasm in his voice was light, but she raised a brow as if surprised that he’d be anything but chagrin. “I thought we already hashed this out at the pub.” Matt grabbed the hem of his t-shirt and lifted it to wipe the sweat from his face. Her gaze dropped to his exposed torso, and her expression shifted from anger to desire, if even just for a second. If he hadn’t been watching her closely, he might have missed it.

“Don’t get smart with me.” She raked her gaze back up his body. When she reached his face, he smirked. She lowered her brows and glowered. “As the evening went on, I had to field questions about your behavior. Those are my co-workers, my friends. Acting like a jealous boyfriend was immature and thoughtless. For someone who wants our situation to be nonexistent, you’ve opened a can of worms. The rumors have officially started.”

“I apologized, Gracey.” He dropped the fabric in his hands, and the bottom half of his shirt covered his abs. “I’ve struggled to deal with our situation. Seeing Jeremy with his arm around you did make me flip out like a jealous boyfriend. I freaked out. My behavior was irrational. I admit it. I don’t tend to think rationally where you’re concerned, so I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

She twisted strands of hair around her index finger and glanced down at the floor. Her anger dissipated for a split second, and she looked vulnerable, exposed, and his heart tightened at the sight. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and shelter her from all the things that made her anything but happy. Unfortunately, that likely included him these days.

“It will only be a matter of time before your mom hears about this.” She glanced back up at him. Her hair still tangled around her finger. “Roberta was apparently watching us closely. She asked me what your scene was about. You know she walks with your mom on Monday evenings. Now what?”

Roberta was a good friend of his mother’s and a bit of a nibby-nose. She’d have no problem mentioning his outburst at the pub to his mom, but he wasn’t overly concerned about it. That surprised him. All this time, he’d believed he couldn’t be in a relationship with Gracelyn because of his mother’s reaction, but as he stood here in front of this woman he adored, he wanted the world to know.

A palpable energy emanated from her. The area between them zinged with her anger, but also with something more. Need. Lust.

“Is this why you’re here?” He stepped in her direction, closing the space between them. “Did you come here to scold me? To tell me to grow up? To question how I feel about you?” He gripped her by the shoulders and pressed her against the side of his truck. She gasped, eyes wide. She tensed under his hold. Her sweet, strawberry scent enveloped him, making him lightheaded. His mouth watered to kiss her, to taste her. “Or did you come here with the hope that I would slam you against my truck, hike up your sexy dress, and sink deep inside you with my now-hard cock?”

She inhaled sharply at his words, but her muscles relaxed as if submitting to what was about to happen.

Matt lowered his mouth roughly on hers. He molded his lips to hers, eating at her mouth with the hunger of a starved man. She didn’t respond immediately, but she softened her lips, and he thrust his tongue between them, exploring and tasting her. He weaved a hand into her tresses and cupped the back of her head, holding her still so he could take her mouth the way he wanted. Hot and heavy.

“You’re a little scary,” he whispered, turning to look into her eyes.

Casey knew he was trying to be serious, but she had to laugh. “Me? You’d pretty much only seen me in sweatpants and knew I had nothing but eggs and beer in the fridge. If I’m scary, it’s because I’m the loser monster that follows young kids around, providing ample fodder for their parents to issue warnings about what will happen if they don’t do their homework and wind up with too many cats.”

Ben smirked and shook his head. “Something tells me you always did your homework. And last time I checked, you don’t have any cats.”

“Only because I’m not responsible enough to take care of them. I can’t even keep a house plant alive.”

“Overrated skills,” he said. “And you should try a jade plant. You can neglect them to your heart’s content and they’ll live.”

“Tried it,” she countered. “I was expertly negligent and still it died.”

He pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh. “You are a special one.”

“See?” she said. “Not scary.”

“Only scary to a houseplant.”

“Which you are not.”

“But I’m serious.” Ben brought the conversation back around. “You are. You’re beautiful, smart, thoughtful, observant, kind, and an incredible artist—I mean really—and you withstand subzero temperatures—”

“The water’s not that cold,” she objected, but he shook his head.

“Don’t interrupt me when I’m complimenting you. It’s intimidating to be around someone who’s basically the whole package. And intimidating because, how do I even get her attention when she has no reason to glance my way? And then, oh my god, what do I do if she actually does?” He shook his head.

“You’re crazy,” Casey murmured, not sure what to make of this boy who clearly hadn’t been around enough women to know that Casey was anything but special, and far from scary.

“I guess I’ve never known anyone who felt this real,” he whispered so quietly, it was almost as if he hasn’t spoken.

There was a long pause. Casey had no idea how to respond. There was no way to explain how deeply she had longed for him to come back, and your dimples make my heart beat like a bongo set didn’t exactly have the right ring. It was crazy, when she thought about how little they actually knew each other.

But it was even crazier to pretend that after what they’d just shared, they could return to their lives pretending that nothing had changed.

“I think I really like you,” Ben finally said. Quietly, in that embarrassed tone he got that made her want to kiss him all over.

But instead she laughed. “You think?” She raised an eyebrow.

“I know,” he whispered in her ear, his breath shooting arrows down her spine. “I’ve had way too long to think about it, and I know.”

At last he turned to go. On his way out, he wished Casey a good night and then reached up to tap the back of the doorframe before swinging the door shut behind him.

She really, really wished he hadn’t.

Because lifting his arms to the doorframe made his jacket rise up enough to expose the top of his low-slung jeans. As well as the thin green line of his boxers hugging his hips underneath. It didn’t take X-ray vision to know that just above that patch of skin, hidden by his white undershirt and whatever else he had on under his black North Face fleece, were two long dimples carved into his lower back, matching the dimples on his face.

Officially the sexiest part of any man’s body, and the one thing Casey dreamed about on those rare nights when she did, in fact, allow herself to dream.

But this was not going to be one of those images she replayed in her mind’s eye. She was already berating herself for noticing. Not only had she turned to putty simply because he slid the hair out of his eyes as if he didn’t know the gesture would make every girl within a ten-mile radius want to extend her hand to his cheek. But she, Cassandra Webb, competent, capable, got dumped on her ass but still got back up again, thirty-four-year-old independent woman, had checked out his twenty-something-year-old butt.

She made herself swear she wouldn’t give him a second thought. She wasn’t interested. Period. She’d come to the woods to be alone and she fully planned to stay that way. She was going to read a little more until she was sufficiently distracted and then head back to her cabin, warm some cookies in the microwave, and go to sleep. Geller would take over registration in the morning and she would never see this group again.

Casey reached for her book, but she couldn’t stop her hand from hovering over the ledger. Before she knew what she was doing, she allowed herself a quick peek at the records and groaned.

Geller’s handwriting was unmistakable. They were staying for four days, three nights.

There was no way she wouldn’t find herself looking at those dimples again.

SYNOPSIS

For ten summers Claire and her mother had been guests at the Prescott’s beach house at Kelly’s Cove. And for ten years she played with Mallory and her twin brother, Colin. But it wasn’t until she returned after college graduation for her last summer there, that she realized Colin had grown into a guy who made her knees knock just by smiling at her. Being from different worlds, she knew nothing would come from her attraction to him.

Having returned to the states from studying abroad for four years, the last person Colin thought he’d find staying in his bedroom was Claire Ashton. Lanky and awkward during her adolescent years, he had to look twice to make sure this was the same girl. After a week together it was obvious he’d overlooked something before, because he felt things for her he’d never experienced before. There was only one problem—his last name and all that came with it would never permit him to be with her.

In the end, it’s either love or prestige that will win in the game of love.

EXCERPT

He swam closer to her, reaching out in the dark recesses of the water and brushing against her arm. Thoughts of having accidently touched her in other places began sending messages to his mind, thus sending a wave of heat through his already cooling off body. She situated herself in front of him, holding onto his arms. They were face to face with one another. Her wet hair smelled like strawberries.

            “That’s better,” she said.

He watched as she looked in his eyes. Her lips were glistening in the light of the moon. Her hair was completely soaked and pulled back from her face. A smile broke out on her face. He was barely able to make out the dimple on her right cheek that he’d known was there. “You have a pretty smile.”

“Does that mean you purposely looked at me changing out of my gown and now feel guilty about it? By saying something nice?”

“Man, has anyone ever paid you a complement that you didn’t think had an ulterior motive behind it?”

“Says the guy who climbed up in a tree to watch me swim naked?”

“Jeez, that was years ago, Claire. We’re grown up now. You’ve definitely grown up.”

“What does that mean?” She stopped twirling him around in circles.

“Just that you’ve matured. You’re very pretty. Some might say alluring. Maybe not me, but some might.”

“Okay. Thank you…I think. And why not you?”

“Oh, you know. I’ve seen your skinny body—pre-college years. It’s not for me to say something like that. We have history…snakes, frogs…you know.”

            “I see.”

No, she didn’t. He wanted to say he did find her alluring. Captivating even. He wanted to tell her how she made him feel at ease, or how at dinner he thought several times that she’d caught him watching her, or even how the sight of her body made him wish they were two different people in a different time.

“I dare you to swim to the beacon.”

“Now?” He held tighter to her arms. She was drifting from his grasp.

            “Sure.”

            “Okay.”

Without hesitation, he swam in the direction of that stupid beacon. “Hey, wait, I was kidding. Not tonight,” she yelled out to him.

It was too late, he was headed for it. Something of a challenge for his male ego. He’d taken up swimming as a sport in college and knew he could do it without a problem. That was until he heard Claire’s scream.

            “Colin, come quick.”

He whipped around and did long breaststrokes to back to her.

“Something brushed up against me. God, it’s going to eat me alive! I felt it.” She was hysterical, flailing her arms and panting wildly.

He finally made it to her. She grabbed his neck and pulled him closer. He noticed she was shaking, her lips even quivering.

“It’s okay. I’ve got you.” He stroked her hair, trying his best to calm her down.

“It was something big. I thought it was going to grab my legs and take me under. Colin, I’m serious.”

He felt her breasts press against him, her breathing rising and lowering with rapidness. Her legs had become locked around his waist. He felt his own heart, palpitating like a man who’d just swam thirty laps in less than two minutes. But, it wasn’t from the swim. It was from the touch of her skin on his. He had to get some space between them.

“Let’s get you out of here. Come on.”

When they got to shallow water she un-gripped the vice she had put on him. He escorted her to the sandy beach. The moon temporarily had ducked behind a cloud, making it difficult to see their way back to the pier.

“Stand here, I’ll go and get your gown.”

Claire stood there and waited for him to return, her arms crossed in front of her. He was glad for the opportunity to get himself in check before standing close to her again. When he returned with the gown, he’d already put on his shorts. He handed her clothes to her, with his other hand over his eyes. “Here.”

It took her only a second to get dressed. “You can open your eyes now,” she said quietly.

He removed his hand and looked at her. Even in the dimmer light, she looked so much better with nothing on. He knew he better get it together before morning came and he had to face her in the daylight. His mother had always told him how transparent his feelings about things showed on his face.

“I might actually get some sleep after all that exercise in screaming and flailing for my life.”

He laughed and took her hand in his. It felt like the natural thing to do now that they’d done it in the water, but she seemed puzzled by it. Her big brown eyes squinted, almost questioning his. It was too late to let it go. He figured if she didn’t want to hold his, she would’ve let go first. But she didn’t, she squeezed harder.

They returned to the creaking back porch door. Before she grabbed for it, he took her other hand and held it in his. “I had a great time with you tonight, Claire. Even if all you did was scream like a girl and think an eel was eating at your legs.”

            “That was an—“

Before she could finish her sentence, he lightly pulled her by the neck and kissed her. Her lips were moist and chilled like the water they’d just come from—salty, too. He wasn’t sure if she was going to kiss back or smack him for getting fresh. When he pulled away he saw her eyes were still closed. She seemed more relaxed than earlier. He’d wagered correctly. Claire Ashton was receptive to what this summer could turn out to be for the both of them.

As a child, I didn’t have imaginary tea parties.

I was an outlaw fighting alongside the greatest rogue in Sherwood Forest, the notorious Robin Hood.

The stories kept me sane when I had no control.

They freed me from a bleak existence of abuse and neglect.

If life taught me anything, it was that living was hard, and only the dreams you made happen came true.

At nineteen, living at my uncle’s cabin in the Oregon Cascades, my life was anything but the fantasies of my childhood.

I was free, but I was alone. I was surviving.

Until I hiked into the mountains and carelessly challenged the universe to notice me.

A door made of white light appeared in front of me, compelling me to step through. How was I supposed to know one step would change my life forever, in the most unexpected of ways?

I took it. I stepped through.

Into the greatest trials, both physical and emotional, I’d ever face—into another time and unknown world that would test my strength to my core.

I would fight…

I would kill…

I would love…

Most of all, I would live.

In the morning, I woke to Robin’s hand on my shoulder. He raised a finger to his lips and beckoned me to follow him out of the camp. We walked through the forest and emerged at the river downstream from where Much and I had fought.

Still bleary-eyed with sleep, I rubbed my face, trying to wake up. Robin was silent, so I watched the water, drowsy, not really thinking about who stood beside me. I wished I could strip off my clothes and wash myself in the pre-dawn freshness, but thoughts of bathing vanished when I remembered where I was.

I waited for Robin to speak first, afraid to ask why I was with him, worrying more with each moment that passed.

“Much tells me you have quite a hand for the quarterstaff,” he said at last. He sat on the riverbank and motioned for me to join him.

“He told me that, too,” I agreed, still wary as I settled beside him.

“He said you caught him looking away, played him up on it, and threw him.”

“I did.”

“You don’t sound like you’re too proud of it.” He threw stems of long grass into the river, watching them float away.

“It’s not my nature to be proud, sir.” He was after something. I could tell.

“You should be. It’s been a long time since anyone has thrown Much, except John.”

“I was lucky.”

“But you can see people’s weaknesses, know how to get behind someone’s guard. That takes a good eye and a sharp mind. Use it.”

I looked at him keenly for a moment, different thoughts crossing my mind. “You didn’t bring me out here to talk about quarterstaffs and fights.”

“Like I said, a sharp mind.” Robin looked at me. I shifted my gaze away from his, unused to hearing compliments. “No, I didn’t. Some of my men are a bit…concerned about your background. I won’t mention any names, but they’re not sure about my decision to let you join us. I’m curious about you myself.”

“So you want to hear all of it.” I sighed. I knew I couldn’t go on forever without telling someone. But how much should I reveal? “If I tell you,” I said, still debating where I should draw the line, “and hide nothing, I would rather you didn’t share it with any of your men. I will abide by your decision.”

“You have my word.” His tone suggested he was intrigued.

“That’s all I ask. First, I must ask a question.”

“Yes?”

“What do you think about women?”

“What?!”

“Do you believe women should be allowed to do what they set their minds to, or should they only bear children and keep homes?”

Robin thought for a moment, looking at me with that probing stare of his.

“It depends on what they set their minds to,” he said carefully, watching. “Why do you ask?” I knew at that point he had a good idea why and was only waiting to hear it.

I took a deep breath. “Because I am a woman.”

Robin’s stare intensified. I wanted to shrink away from his gaze and hide somewhere, but I held out, staring back at him. I couldn’t back down. Not this time. There was too much to lose.

The look on his face was hard to read. I saw disbelief, but I couldn’t tell if he was angry or not. After a long moment, my stomach growled, breaking the tension. He looked away, gazing out over the river.

“Tell me why you are here.”

I looked down at the ground, forming the words in my head. “I am here because I’ve always dreamed of being here. My dream came true. I am a woman, yes, but there is more. What I have to say sounds impossible, but it is the truth.” I hadn’t decided to tell him all of it until that moment. “I come from a land called America, as I said. You haven’t heard of it because it hasn’t been discovered yet. I come from the future, Robin.”

I looked up to see his reaction to my words, but his face was a mask as he looked out over the river. “Continue,” he said, his voice hard.

I didn’t stop to think of a story. This time, I spoke from my heart. “In my world, Robin Hood, I am an outcast.” I emphasized the name his outlawry had given him, hoping he would see some common thread to bind our lives together. “I don’t fit anywhere. I live in the mountains and come down twice a year for supplies. I spend the rest of my time hunting, learning to survive. I am alone because no one wants to understand me and be my friend. In my world, I am a very lonely person….

“But here, in this world, in this time, I finally feel like a whole person. Except for the fate of being female, I might have been born in this time to be what I could be here. But I am from the future. And why not? Stranger things have happened. Man has walked on the moon. He flies in metal birds that weigh tens of thousands of pounds. He splits atoms. He can speak to someone thousands of miles away. Why not fall through a door in time? If you could see what the future is like, Robin, my being here would not surprise you.

“And you…. In my time, you are a legend in storybooks my mother read to me. I dreamt of joining your men and working my way to fame like yours. To experience the reality….” I broke off my rambling with a sigh and gathered my thoughts.

“I have dreamt so well, it has become reality for me. I can’t tell you how I come to be here—I don’t know myself—but here I am.”

I didn’t voice my greatest fear. Maybe I am still at home, in a coma. Or maybe I am dead.

It would be a cruel cosmic joke if I woke up now when all I wanted was to stay.

I waited for his response, unsure what would happen next. I had let my nerves do some of the talking and didn’t know if I had said too much…or too little. I wanted so much for him to believe me.

Robin turned to look at me, his face flushed. “You are jesting, trying to distract me from the fact you are a woman.”

“No, sir,” I insisted. “As impossible as it seems, I’m telling the truth.”

His stare intensified, stripping away any chance I had of misleading him. I could almost feel him flipping through pages of information in my mind as he judged my every reaction. “Then you are a witch?”

I jumped at the implication. “No!”

“But to come as you have said, there must have been strong magic.”

“I don’t have magic, Robin, but it must be magic that sent me here. It must have been the challenge. Yes. That’s as good an explanation as any.”

“What do you mean?” He eyed me with suspicion.

I blushed slightly. “I was standing there, on the knoll, burning inside with spring fever. I had been thinking of you and yelled out that I was there, that I was alive….” The feelings of that moment came back. In retrospect, I thought myself extreme, my challenge quite foolish. If the answer hadn’t been to send me through time…. “And then I was here. I don’t want to leave.” I’ll be more careful when next I dare the universe to notice me, I added silently.

“Magic is strong, Kay. Never underestimate the power of wishes. Or perhaps someone here called you. But as you say, you are here.”

Nodding, I held my breath, not daring to speak.

“And because you have told me the truth, you may stay. I don’t understand it, but I believe it is truth.” His eyes glazed over for a moment. “I have so many questions about my….” He shook his head. “Your secret will remain with me. But because you are a woman, I would test your strength.”

“How, sir?” I blurted, relieved and anxious all at once.

“I would cross staffs with you.” He smiled.

I went after him in search of answers, certain he had blood on his hands. Now I’ve fallen prey to his seductive looks and commanding charisma.

I know he is a threat. He’s entwined in a dangerous world I don’t understand. But that doesn’t stop me from aching for his touch, for the taste of his wicked lips.

Before I can truly surrender to the fire smoldering between us, I need to know more. I have to see behind the doors he keeps firmly locked.

I need to discover what he’s hiding in the shadowy world known as the House of Sin…

**WARNING!**
This book is very sexy, very dark, and very addictive! Contains consensual kink and a dark and dominant hero with a dangerous secret. This is a big story that can’t be told in only one book so there is a cliffhanger – but never fear, book two releases three weeks later.

“You don’t want me,” he whispered in a lifeless voice, one I’d never heard from him. “You want a taste of the forbidden. Of what you think you saw at that party in New York. But what’s in me is not the same. It’s worse. It’s a darkness you can’t even imagine. And if you stay, it will devour you too.”

My heart thumped hard against my ribs as I tried to make sense of what he’d just said. I hadn’t been afraid once since I’d been with him, but I couldn’t deny the alarm sounding in my head as I looked into his haunted eyes. Because that was what they were, I realized. Haunted. By shadows and memories that sent icy fingers of dread down my spine. Whatever he was remembering, whatever he struggled with was so terrifying, it had just sucked the life out of his eyes right in front of me, leaving behind only a ghost of the man I’d spent the last few days with.

Could I survive that kind of darkness? I swallowed hard, trying to think.

He was right. What drew me to him wasn’t just his animal magnetism or his insanely good looks or even his overwhelming, protective nature. I was drawn to the very thing he seemed desperate to keep from me. To the danger swirling around him. To the shadows lurking in his eyes. To that forbidden darkness buried inside that was at the root of his need for dominance and control and even his hunger for me.
