by Tammy L. Bailey

Genre: Historical Romance

Publisher: Entangled

Blurb

The Marquess of Wesley is out for blood. For a year, Lord Wesley has tried to

undo the devastation his father left to Penndrake, their ancestral home, only to

discover the man gambled it away right before his death. Now Wesley is being

blackmailed by the new owner into marrying a woman he’s never met in order to

get it back. But his intentions are less than honorable…

At one and twenty, Miss Kate Holden intends to become a governess, having

sworn off all men years ago. However, her plans are halted when she receives a

daunting letter from her cousin about a Lord Wesley. Ignorant of the name, and

the devilish marquess that wears it all too well, she nearly ends up compromised.

Refusing to fall prey to Wesley’s skillful seduction, Kate decides to turn things

around on the rake. But the high-stakes game between them soon leads to her

losing the last thing she expected…her heart.

Excerpt

“So, to what do I owe the honor of your divine company, Miss Holden?”

She quirked a neat eyebrow and opened her rose petal lips, a motion he watched with sober interest. Everything about her stirred a subtle, yet alarming attraction. All of this forced him to keep reminding himself the woman existed only as a means to an end, nothing more.

“My lord, I’ve come…” She hesitated, he believed, to gather enough courage to go through with her reason.

“You’ve come,” he repeated in an overly husky voice, trying to fluster her further.

She puffed out her cheeks and tempered a few silent words. He wanted to chuckle. He refrained, instead, by hiding his mirth behind a tight fist.

“You think my discomfort is amusing, do you not?” she asked, seeing right through him. If she expected an answer, she didn’t wait to hear it, her body set in motion at a hurried pace in his direction. “Edward told me—”

Wesley shot out of his relaxed stance and met her halfway. He towered over her, trying to intimidate her. To his dismay, she didn’t cower, she didn’t even flinch.

“Yes,” he said, bending down low enough to see a hint of amber reflected in her distrusting eyes. “Go on. I’d love to hear more about your dear cousin, Miss Holden.”

As he waited for her response, the light from the open window shifted, bathing his guest in the brilliant radiance of the late-day sun. She remained silent, her hands flying to the pocket of her dress, as if to protect whatever lay inside. Beyond any doubt, Wesley believed she knew something. She would not be here, would not have come swathed in mystery and risking her own reputation, if this did not involve Edward’s guidance in some way.

The curiosity of what she held compelled him to keep her at Penndrake until he found out what Edward Garrett wanted her to know. Out of patience, he eased away from her.

“Miss Holden, may I suggest we take a walk in the gardens? The day is almost gone, but there is enough light to see us through, allowing us to discuss this further without interruption.”

Again, she opened her curved lip but said nothing. Suspicion sprang from her demeanor, her gaze darting

around the room as if searching for the closest exit. Instead of fleeing, however, she motioned with a surrendering nod, stepping forward until the coat of arms over the fireplace caught her attention.

He studied her as she examined the Wesley motto, her lips moving mutely as she read the three words embedded at the bottom of the shield. Shameful heat rose from deep inside him, and he lifted a rare prayer to the heavens for her not to know the meaning of those powerful words. Maybes he was too poor to have been schooled like her giddy cousins.

Even so, he studied her curious face until she turned to him, her eyes void of any awareness or comprehension. Breathing a sigh of relief, he held his arm out for her to take. She paused, a timid and uncertain hand coming up to rest on his sleeve.

Outside, the day had faded into dusk and dazzled the sight, impressing upon it a majestic beauty of pearl-pink altostratus clouds. Behind them tumbled a blanket of slate-gray vapors, an ominous forewarning of twilight.

The much cooler breeze tugged at the tails of his heavy jacket. He slowed his pace and continued to escort her down a flight of stone steps onto a spacious unblemished lawn. They walked for several hundred yards in silence, him admiring her wondrous interest. On their way to the garden, they passed the stocked fish pond and the honeysuckle-laden labyrinth.

Toward the east, he halted at a stone fountain, centered in the thickest part of the coppice. Large shadows turned the evening darker, the chilly autumn wind transforming Miss Holden’s dewy skin to a nice pink. With his arm outstretched, he persuaded her to a wrought iron bench on the opposite side of where they stood.

“Please have a seat with me.”

He pointed, and she accepted his invitation, much too carelessly, he thought.

She sat down first, her behind resting on the farthest edge of one side. Not to frighten her, he followed suit, allowing enough space to fit her three female cousins between them.

After a quiet moment, he pronounced, “I believe you don’t think too highly of me, Miss Holden, and I would like to persuade you otherwise.”

She drew back and gawked at him with wide sage-like eyes. A wisp of her hair tumbled down into her thick lashes.

Unhindered, she blew it away with a quickly exhaled breath.

Her refinement, or lack thereof, surprised him. Most women—no—all women of her lower station practiced the art of how to appeal to a man and his interests, enough so to attract an amiable and sensible husband. Perhaps, however, Miss Kathryn Holden had no reason to draw the attention of the opposite sex, especially since she had another companion in mind. He tried to convince himself it didn’t matter either way.

Her experience might play to his advantage.

Still, he sought the truth on the matter, just because his thoughts weren’t able to let it go. “Forgive me if I seem too impertinent—”

She scoffed. “You’ve just now thought of apologizing for something you’re about to say? How extraordinary.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “Sarcasm does not become you, madam.”

“Neither does naivety.”

The whir of a vehicle engine and the squeal of tires pulling into his driveway caught his attention. Gracelyn’s Jeep Cherokee slammed to a halt. She pushed the door open, banged it shut, and marched up the driveway in her black, heeled boots.

“How dare you,” she spewed, strutting in his direction.

Her hips swayed in a tantalizing rhythm, mesmerizing him. He shook his head, trying to gather himself. Her long, chestnut waves flowed over her shoulders. Her blue eyes sparkled with fierceness and determination. For what, he didn’t know, but she looked gorgeous. The exhaustion that had consumed him a minute ago washed away with a new wave of sexual energy. Heat spread through him and settled in his groin, thickening his dick. Something about her had him hornier than a teenager whenever she was within view, even if she looked like she might knee him in the balls.

She’d definitely be the death of him.

“How could you embarrass me like that?” She halted just inside the garage, her hands on her hips, and her chin tilted up in defiance.

“Well, good evening to you, too.” The sarcasm in his voice was light, but she raised a brow as if surprised that he’d be anything but chagrin. “I thought we already hashed this out at the pub.” Matt grabbed the hem of his t-shirt and lifted it to wipe the sweat from his face. Her gaze dropped to his exposed torso, and her expression shifted from anger to desire, if even just for a second. If he hadn’t been watching her closely, he might have missed it.

“Don’t get smart with me.” She raked her gaze back up his body. When she reached his face, he smirked. She lowered her brows and glowered. “As the evening went on, I had to field questions about your behavior. Those are my co-workers, my friends. Acting like a jealous boyfriend was immature and thoughtless. For someone who wants our situation to be nonexistent, you’ve opened a can of worms. The rumors have officially started.”

“I apologized, Gracey.” He dropped the fabric in his hands, and the bottom half of his shirt covered his abs. “I’ve struggled to deal with our situation. Seeing Jeremy with his arm around you did make me flip out like a jealous boyfriend. I freaked out. My behavior was irrational. I admit it. I don’t tend to think rationally where you’re concerned, so I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

She twisted strands of hair around her index finger and glanced down at the floor. Her anger dissipated for a split second, and she looked vulnerable, exposed, and his heart tightened at the sight. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and shelter her from all the things that made her anything but happy. Unfortunately, that likely included him these days.

“It will only be a matter of time before your mom hears about this.” She glanced back up at him. Her hair still tangled around her finger. “Roberta was apparently watching us closely. She asked me what your scene was about. You know she walks with your mom on Monday evenings. Now what?”

Roberta was a good friend of his mother’s and a bit of a nibby-nose. She’d have no problem mentioning his outburst at the pub to his mom, but he wasn’t overly concerned about it. That surprised him. All this time, he’d believed he couldn’t be in a relationship with Gracelyn because of his mother’s reaction, but as he stood here in front of this woman he adored, he wanted the world to know.

A palpable energy emanated from her. The area between them zinged with her anger, but also with something more. Need. Lust.

“Is this why you’re here?” He stepped in her direction, closing the space between them. “Did you come here to scold me? To tell me to grow up? To question how I feel about you?” He gripped her by the shoulders and pressed her against the side of his truck. She gasped, eyes wide. She tensed under his hold. Her sweet, strawberry scent enveloped him, making him lightheaded. His mouth watered to kiss her, to taste her. “Or did you come here with the hope that I would slam you against my truck, hike up your sexy dress, and sink deep inside you with my now-hard cock?”

She inhaled sharply at his words, but her muscles relaxed as if submitting to what was about to happen.

Matt lowered his mouth roughly on hers. He molded his lips to hers, eating at her mouth with the hunger of a starved man. She didn’t respond immediately, but she softened her lips, and he thrust his tongue between them, exploring and tasting her. He weaved a hand into her tresses and cupped the back of her head, holding her still so he could take her mouth the way he wanted. Hot and heavy.

SYNOPSIS

Reeling from a sudden breakup, Casey Webb leaves Brooklyn, drives north, and settles in a sleepy mountain town in upstate New York. She’s convinced she’s happy being alone—until she reads the acknowledgments in her ex-boyfriend’s hit debut novel, thanking his new girlfriend “above all.”

Good thing Ben Mailer is in town. The hot, young Brooklyn-bound chef offers the perfect distraction. Soon the backwoods are heating up… But as their fling turns into more, the demands of Ben’s family and budding career make moving to her idyllic town impossible.

Now Casey must decide what she can’t live without—her life in the mountains, or the man she wants to be hers above all.

EXCERPT- ABOVE ALL by Rebecca Brooks

“You’re a little scary,” he whispered, turning to look into her eyes.

Casey knew he was trying to be serious, but she had to laugh. “Me? You’d pretty much only seen me in sweatpants and knew I had nothing but eggs and beer in the fridge. If I’m scary, it’s because I’m the loser monster that follows young kids around, providing ample fodder for their parents to issue warnings about what will happen if they don’t do their homework and wind up with too many cats.”

Ben smirked and shook his head. “Something tells me you always did your homework. And last time I checked, you don’t have any cats.”

“Only because I’m not responsible enough to take care of them. I can’t even keep a house plant alive.”

“Overrated skills,” he said. “And you should try a jade plant. You can neglect them to your heart’s content and they’ll live.”

“Tried it,” she countered. “I was expertly negligent and still it died.”

He pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh. “You are a special one.”

“See?” she said. “Not scary.”

“Only scary to a houseplant.”

“Which you are not.”

“But I’m serious.” Ben brought the conversation back around. “You are. You’re beautiful, smart, thoughtful, observant, kind, and an incredible artist—I mean really—and you withstand subzero temperatures—”

“The water’s not that cold,” she objected, but he shook his head.

“Don’t interrupt me when I’m complimenting you. It’s intimidating to be around someone who’s basically the whole package. And intimidating because, how do I even get her attention when she has no reason to glance my way? And then, oh my god, what do I do if she actually does?” He shook his head.

“You’re crazy,” Casey murmured, not sure what to make of this boy who clearly hadn’t been around enough women to know that Casey was anything but special, and far from scary.

“I guess I’ve never known anyone who felt this real,” he whispered so quietly, it was almost as if he hasn’t spoken.

There was a long pause. Casey had no idea how to respond. There was no way to explain how deeply she had longed for him to come back, and your dimples make my heart beat like a bongo set didn’t exactly have the right ring. It was crazy, when she thought about how little they actually knew each other.

But it was even crazier to pretend that after what they’d just shared, they could return to their lives pretending that nothing had changed.

“I think I really like you,” Ben finally said. Quietly, in that embarrassed tone he got that made her want to kiss him all over.

But instead she laughed. “You think?” She raised an eyebrow.

“I know,” he whispered in her ear, his breath shooting arrows down her spine. “I’ve had way too long to think about it, and I know.”

 review

I received an ARC of Wicked Games by the very talented Author L A Cotton. In exchange for an honest opinion. This is my (mismousey) very honest opinion of her book.
Having read several of Ms. Cotton’s book’s already. This one is written in her tremendous style of intrigue, love and suspense. She has you at the edge of your seat( page). Wanting more and more of the story.
In this particular book Wicked Games- we find our main characters Maverick and Lo going through changes. Maverick is now away in college playing basketball. And Lo is left behind during her senior year at high school.( In order to beable to actually follow this couple and understand all the challenges they have faced. You will need to read the first books in this series.) Lo gets a job at a spots bar as waitress. Things at home are sorta hard for her. Along with having to handle the issue of her boyfriend being in college.
Back in college the Zack is the head of the frat and he likes to play games. Bad ones. But there is someone else that has been playing games with Lo. Who you ask and what happens?? These are the wicked games they play. And you need to read ths hot story!
I recommend this book to all young adults, who love a good contemporary romance. I give this a 5 mouse paw rating. Now what are you waiting for? Run and get your copy at the the nearest location today. Ms Cotton- I look forward to the next in the series. Got to have more of Maverick and Lo!

EXCERPT

“Maverick?” I gasped
at the sight of my boyfriend leaning against the hood of his car. “What are
you—”

He stalked toward me,
buried his hands in my hair, and kissed me. Deep and slow and full of unspoken
promises. Our tongues tangled together as he guided me against the side of his
car, pressing into me, showing me just how much he’d missed me.

“Maverick,” I
murmured, curling my hands into his t-shirt.

“Fuck, I’ve missed
you,” he breathed between kisses.

When he finally pulled
away and stared down at me with those intense eyes of his, my mind cleared.
“Why are you here?” I arched a brow. I wanted to believe it was because he
missed me and just had to see me but there was something glittering his eyes.

“I missed you,” he
repeated.

“Maverick…”

His walls slammed up
and he narrowed his eyes. I let out a heavy sigh, able to see straight through
him. “Kyle told you, didn’t he?”

“It should have come
from you.”  He gave me a pointed look that I felt all the way down to the
pit of my stomach.

“That’s not fair.” I
stepped back, running a hand through my hair. “I called last night to tell you
and you were—”

“Shit, I know.” He
tilted his face skyward and let out a long sigh. “This, me being away, it’s
harder than I thought it would be.” When his eyes met mine again, my shoulders relaxed,
the annoyance ebbing away.

“I know. We both just
need to give it time.” I slid my fingers through his belt loops, pulling us
together. “And we both need to relax a little. I can’t freak out every time you
go to a party and you can’t freak out that I’m working here.”

He stiffened but I
yanked harder. “Maverick.”

“I won’t pretend to
like it, because I don’t.” His dark gaze flicked behind us to Hitters. “But I
trust you, Lo, and I know you need this.”

“Thank you.” I leaned
up pressing a kiss to his jaw, but Maverick dipped his head, capturing my lips
in a breath-taking kiss.

“Maybe we should take
this somewhere else,” I whispered. “Unless you have to get back to SU?”

“I don’t need to be
back until morning. You have me all night.” His voice was thick with need, and
it softened something inside of me.

“Perfect. I’ll text my
dad and let him know we’ll be at the pool house.”

His eyes danced with
desire as he kissed me again and then opened the door for me. I slid inside and
waited for him. There was so much I wanted to ask but I didn’t want to ruin the
moment either. So I sat quietly while he drove us back to his house.

“I can’t believe
you’re here,” I said as he pulled into the drive away and cut the engine.

“I wanted to see you.”

“Wanted to or needed
to?”

“Both, I guess,” he
admitted, reaching over and sliding his fingers into mine. “I’m not going to
lie to you, Lo, I was pissed when Kyle told me about Hitters. But mostly, I was
pissed it came from him and not you.”

“Maverick, I— you’re
right. I should have told you. I should have made you listen. But Gus is good
people. And Sarah and Liam seem really nice. And it means I don’t have to be
there so much.”

His expression
softened. Maverick didn’t need me to spell it out for him, he knew how hard
things had been since Stella and Bethany had moved in a little over a week ago.
“Come on, let’s go inside. We’ve missed you.”

“We?” I asked as I
climbed out of the car. Maverick smirked, holding out his hand for me.

“Yeah, me and him.” He
dropped his eyes to his crotch and I rolled my eyes.

“Oh my god, you’re
turning into Kyle.”

“I thought you dug
that cocky humor he has going for him?”

“Gross.” I smacked his
arm. “That’s my cousin you’re taking about.”

“When you say it like
that…” Maverick grimaced and pulled me into the yard. The Stone-Prince house
had become my second home over the summer. Which was weird since I once hated
the place and everything it stood for. But now I kind of loved it. Not to
mention the fact it housed three of my favourite people.

“Should we go inside
and say hello?” I flicked my head to the main house, but Maverick was already
pulling me toward the pool house.

“We can say hello
later or in the morning.”

I couldn’t hide my
smile at that. Even if it was only a flying visit, Maverick was home and didn’t
want to waste a single second of it.

Blurb

In our world, outside forces find reasons to keep us apart. Wealth, religion, and

race are dividing factors. All manmade barriers that have nothing to do with the

heart of the people involved. Although wealth and religion can be hidden, race

cannot.

On June 12th, 1967, the Supreme Court struck down the laws that enforced

racial segregation in marriage and Loving Day was created. To celebrate this

step to remove this unjust barrier to love, eight Interracial Romance authors

have come together to celebrate with stories that challenge the social norms on

both sides of the coin. With contemporary, paranormal and historical settings

discover how finding the other half of your soul is worth fighting for.

At last he turned to go. On his way out, he wished Casey a good night and then reached up to tap the back of the doorframe before swinging the door shut behind him.

She really, really wished he hadn’t.

Because lifting his arms to the doorframe made his jacket rise up enough to expose the top of his low-slung jeans. As well as the thin green line of his boxers hugging his hips underneath. It didn’t take X-ray vision to know that just above that patch of skin, hidden by his white undershirt and whatever else he had on under his black North Face fleece, were two long dimples carved into his lower back, matching the dimples on his face.

Officially the sexiest part of any man’s body, and the one thing Casey dreamed about on those rare nights when she did, in fact, allow herself to dream.

But this was not going to be one of those images she replayed in her mind’s eye. She was already berating herself for noticing. Not only had she turned to putty simply because he slid the hair out of his eyes as if he didn’t know the gesture would make every girl within a ten-mile radius want to extend her hand to his cheek. But she, Cassandra Webb, competent, capable, got dumped on her ass but still got back up again, thirty-four-year-old independent woman, had checked out his twenty-something-year-old butt.

She made herself swear she wouldn’t give him a second thought. She wasn’t interested. Period. She’d come to the woods to be alone and she fully planned to stay that way. She was going to read a little more until she was sufficiently distracted and then head back to her cabin, warm some cookies in the microwave, and go to sleep. Geller would take over registration in the morning and she would never see this group again.

Casey reached for her book, but she couldn’t stop her hand from hovering over the ledger. Before she knew what she was doing, she allowed herself a quick peek at the records and groaned.

Geller’s handwriting was unmistakable. They were staying for four days, three nights.

There was no way she wouldn’t find herself looking at those dimples again.

ABOUT REBECCA BROOKS

Rebecca Brooks lives in New York City in an apartment filled with books. She received a PhD in English but decided it was more fun to write books than write about them. She has backpacked alone through India and Brazil, traveled by cargo boat down the Amazon River, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, explored ice caves in Peru, trekked to the source of the Ganges, and sunbathed in Burma, but she always likes coming home to a cold beer and her hot husband in the Bronx. Her books are about independent women who leave their old lives behind to try something new—and find the passion, excitement and purpose they didn’t know they’d been missing.

An heiress without a cause.

Two billionaires determined to claim her.

And a war fought on the most dangerous battlefield-the heart.

My story starts with a plunge into the cold water of Manhattan’s harbor. A strong hand hauls me back onto the deck of the luxury yacht. Christopher was supposed to be my enemy. Instead he protects me with fierce determination.

That should have been my happily ever after, but then Sutton appeared–ruthless and seductive. He doesn’t care that my heart belongs to someone else, because he’s determined to win. No matter the cost.

It’s an impossible choice, but I can’t have them both.
