SYNOPSIS

Gracelyn Riley married a firefighter and knew that came with risks. But she never imagined herself widowed in her early thirties with two children to care for on her own. Even though her marriage to Chad Riley had its difficulties, dealing with the last year without him has not been easy. Her brother-in-law, Matt, has been the rock that has kept her from collapsing or imploding.

As a fireman, Matt Riley had been at the scene when his brother, Chad, was killed. For the last year, Matt has suffered from survivor’s guilt and drank himself into oblivion. His sister-in-law, Gracelyn, supported him, lending him a shoulder to cry on. Her friendship has pulled him through time and time again until he finally sobered.

With the year anniversary of Chad’s death upon them, Gracelyn and Matt turn to each for support and comfort. What they didn’t expect was to realize that their feelings for each other go beyond the solid friendship they share. EXCERPT

The whir of a vehicle engine and the squeal of tires pulling into his driveway caught his attention. Gracelyn’s Jeep Cherokee slammed to a halt. She pushed the door open, banged it shut, and marched up the driveway in her black, heeled boots.

“How dare you,” she spewed, strutting in his direction.

Her hips swayed in a tantalizing rhythm, mesmerizing him. He shook his head, trying to gather himself. Her long, chestnut waves flowed over her shoulders. Her blue eyes sparkled with fierceness and determination. For what, he didn’t know, but she looked gorgeous. The exhaustion that had consumed him a minute ago washed away with a new wave of sexual energy. Heat spread through him and settled in his groin, thickening his dick. Something about her had him hornier than a teenager whenever she was within view, even if she looked like she might knee him in the balls.

She’d definitely be the death of him.

“How could you embarrass me like that?” She halted just inside the garage, her hands on her hips, and her chin tilted up in defiance.

“Well, good evening to you, too.” The sarcasm in his voice was light, but she raised a brow as if surprised that he’d be anything but chagrin. “I thought we already hashed this out at the pub.” Matt grabbed the hem of his t-shirt and lifted it to wipe the sweat from his face. Her gaze dropped to his exposed torso, and her expression shifted from anger to desire, if even just for a second. If he hadn’t been watching her closely, he might have missed it.

“Don’t get smart with me.” She raked her gaze back up his body. When she reached his face, he smirked. She lowered her brows and glowered. “As the evening went on, I had to field questions about your behavior. Those are my co-workers, my friends. Acting like a jealous boyfriend was immature and thoughtless. For someone who wants our situation to be nonexistent, you’ve opened a can of worms. The rumors have officially started.”

“I apologized, Gracey.” He dropped the fabric in his hands, and the bottom half of his shirt covered his abs. “I’ve struggled to deal with our situation. Seeing Jeremy with his arm around you did make me flip out like a jealous boyfriend. I freaked out. My behavior was irrational. I admit it. I don’t tend to think rationally where you’re concerned, so I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

She twisted strands of hair around her index finger and glanced down at the floor. Her anger dissipated for a split second, and she looked vulnerable, exposed, and his heart tightened at the sight. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and shelter her from all the things that made her anything but happy. Unfortunately, that likely included him these days.

“It will only be a matter of time before your mom hears about this.” She glanced back up at him. Her hair still tangled around her finger. “Roberta was apparently watching us closely. She asked me what your scene was about. You know she walks with your mom on Monday evenings. Now what?”

Roberta was a good friend of his mother’s and a bit of a nibby-nose. She’d have no problem mentioning his outburst at the pub to his mom, but he wasn’t overly concerned about it. That surprised him. All this time, he’d believed he couldn’t be in a relationship with Gracelyn because of his mother’s reaction, but as he stood here in front of this woman he adored, he wanted the world to know.

A palpable energy emanated from her. The area between them zinged with her anger, but also with something more. Need. Lust.

“Is this why you’re here?” He stepped in her direction, closing the space between them. “Did you come here to scold me? To tell me to grow up? To question how I feel about you?” He gripped her by the shoulders and pressed her against the side of his truck. She gasped, eyes wide. She tensed under his hold. Her sweet, strawberry scent enveloped him, making him lightheaded. His mouth watered to kiss her, to taste her. “Or did you come here with the hope that I would slam you against my truck, hike up your sexy dress, and sink deep inside you with my now-hard cock?”

She inhaled sharply at his words, but her muscles relaxed as if submitting to what was about to happen.

Matt lowered his mouth roughly on hers. He molded his lips to hers, eating at her mouth with the hunger of a starved man. She didn’t respond immediately, but she softened her lips, and he thrust his tongue between them, exploring and tasting her. He weaved a hand into her tresses and cupped the back of her head, holding her still so he could take her mouth the way he wanted. Hot and heavy.

JUST RELEASED “THE CAPTAIN OF HER FATE” BY NINA MASON IT’S HOT!!

Blog Tour

Today, we are featuring The Captain of Her Fate, a saucy and sophisticated Regency romance by Nina Mason, the author of Devil in Duke’s Clothing and The Governess Next Door, among many other books.

4dc0e-blurb2bforsaken

Captain Theobald Raynalds lost his leg at the Battle of Trafalgar and with it, his belief any woman could find a cripple like him unobjectionable enough to love.

Louisa Bennet finds Theo incredibly attractive—both as a man in his own right and as an alternative to the odious cousin her father has arranged for her to marry.

First, however, she must convince the Captain her interest in him stems from the man he is, scars and all, and not on his being the lesser of evils.

review

Like all Nina Mason‘s books, The Captain of Her Fate is well-written and well-researched. The book’s heroine is Louisa Bennet, the eldest of four sisters. Her father has arranged for her to marry her cousin, Charles, who she hates for good reason. Her only chance to escape the marriage is to elope with someone else before the wedding takes place–and that’s where Capt. Theo Raynalds, the hero of the story, comes in. Even before she meets him, Louisa sets her sites on marrying him, sure he can’t be worse than her cousin. There’s just one catch: The Captain has no intention of marrying anyone–and is distrustful of women in general. After losing his leg at Trafalgar, his fiancee dumped him on the grounds that he repulsed her. This led him to conclude no woman worth having would ever find him desirable.

A lot goes on between these two. And Louisa’s father as well. There are so many twists and heart-wrenching moments. Make sure to have plenty of Kleenex on hand. What will happen in the end? You’ll have to read it for yourself to find out. You won’t be sorry you did because this book is amazing and hot! I highly recommend it for all romance lovers, but especially those who can’t resist an awesome historical romance set in the Regency period.

After the Captain’s sister quit the room, Louisa took her advice and dozed until a knock on her bedchamber door brought her back to herself. Just as she opened her mouth to ask who was there, Capt. Raynalds called through the door, “Miss Bennet, may I have a word?”

She hesitated before answering. As desperately as she wanted to see him and hear what he came to say, her sense of propriety told her to refuse him entry. Entertaining a gentleman in her bedchamber was shockingly improper. Under the circumstances, however, she could not bring herself to send him away.

Pulling the bedclothes to her chin to cover the sheer nightgown his sister had loaned her, she said, “Yes, Captain. You may enter.”

He opened the door and, with the aid of his cane, limped to the bedside and looked down at her, his expression inexplicably stern. “Does my sister speak the truth?”

The question at once shocked Louisa’s heart and aroused her fury. She could not decide which she would rather do, curl up and die or strangle his sister with her bare hands. How could the girl betray her confidence by telling her brother her plans?—if, indeed, that was what she had disclosed. Perhaps it was not, in which case, Louisa would be wise to tread carefully to avoid betraying her own secrets (and his trust in the process).

She blinked under his probing stare. “How can I answer that when I have no idea what she might have told you?”

“She told me your father intends to marry you off to a man you despise.”

He looked very unhappy, which pleased her immeasurably. “Yes, that is true. He wants me to marry the cousin to whom his estate is entailed—to ensure my mother and sisters will have somewhere to live after he departs this world.”

The Captain, hands stacked atop his cane, shifted his stance uneasily. “I can understand his motives—he is only doing what he believes best for his family, one can only presume—but I cannot agree with his forcing you to marry a man you abhor. Does he know how much you loathe your cousin?”

“He does.”

“And he insists upon you marrying this man in spite of your feelings?”

“My feelings are of little consequence to my father, I assure you.”

He scrubbed a hand down his face. “Surely there must be some way around marrying this person.”

Did she dare share her idea? No, she mustn’t. If she did, he would never come to trust her. “There is not, short of running away and living as a gypsy.”

He stood there a long time, as if fighting an inner battle. At length, he said, “There is one way I can think of…but I fear I am not the man for the job.”

Louisa’s heart wilted. “You are right. We are strangers. So why should you care what becomes of me?”

Softening in demeanor, he came closer and sat beside her on the bed. “I do care what becomes of you, Miss Bennet—beyond what I am willing to admit—but my heart is not quite invested enough to put a ring on your finger. Neither is my trust. And now, in addition to my standard reservations, I suspect you mean to use me to avoid marrying this cousin of yours.”

“That is untrue!” She looked away so he would not see the desperation in her eyes. “Well, it might be partially true…but I shall endeavor to fall in love with you as soon as I’m able.”

He smiled at her sympathetically. “Forgive me. I by no means wish you unhappy. Truly, I do not. But neither can I consent to binding myself to a woman on the off-chance she will fall in love with me.”

“So, you refuse to help me?”

Turning away from her, he said, with an indignant edge to his voice, “That is supremely unfair, Miss Bennet. Have I not helped you already? Did I not come to your aid when you fell off your horse? Did I not take you in when your own mother left you to my care? Have I not kept my distance to protect you from scandal and ruin?”

The last bit astonished her. Did he really fear what might happen if they were alone together? Were that indeed the case, she might exploit his passions to aid her cause. Much as she hated to resort to such deceitful measures, she could see no other way to escape her marriage to Charles. And it would not be entirely an act; for just now, with him sitting so near, so dangerously near, she wanted nothing more than to be in his arms.

“What if I want you to ruin me?”

The only way the system was reliable when it came to Tiffany
Dempsey was in failing her. Once again, it’d done just that, but this time, she
wasn’t about to accept that nothing could be done. This time, she went to a
source outside the law for help. She’s gone to the Sacred Hearts MC, a club whose
reputation for bloodshed and violence precedes them. It’s a gamble she’s
willing to take; desperate times call for desperate measures and she’s never
been more desperate than she is right now.

Zeb joined the Sacred Hearts by way of a second chance when he thought he had
none. He’s determined to do right by his club and himself by changing his ways.
So, when Dragon, his president, asks him for help, he doesn’t hesitate. He’s
more than happy to give the pretty little stripper with the scarred up face a second
chance of her own. The way he sees it, a survivor like her has more than earned
it.

Neither Tiff nor Zeb expected that this protective detail would be anything
other than a strictly business-like arrangement, but the two find quickly that
they complement each other in just about every way. Maybe, just maybe, it’s
what Dragon had planned. After all, the president of the SHMC is sort of crafty
like that.

“Tiffany, what’s wrong?” I heard Nik say distantly, but my
adrenaline was spiking and I was already moving.
“I’ll call you back, I think he’s here.”
“What?” Nik demanded sharply.
“Go now, Tiff, my office,” Alan said gently and I went.
“Alan’s sending me to his office, Zeke’s handling it at the
front. I’m okay for now,” I told Nik. Despite Alan trying to keep me calm, my
heart was pounding. I almost didn’t register what Nik said.
“I’m on my way, just do what your boss says.”
“I am,” I told him, but I was talking to the empty air, Nik
was already gone.
I clattered up the back stairs in my stripper heels and kicked
the door to Alan’s office closed and turned the lock. I figured it was his
office and he had the key. The space was small, and a bank of windows
overlooked the floor below. It was all right, though. They were mirrors on the
outside and you could only see inside at very specific angles. If I sat at the
desk in front of the windows and ducked down a bit behind the monitors, I would
be invisible so that’s precisely what I did. I sat at Alan’s desk, heart
pounding, stomach curdling, and kept bouncing my gaze back and forth between
the cameras on the monitors and out the window at the floor below.
Zeke was on camera, out front, hands raised and pushing down
in his classic ‘calm the fuck down, I’m trying to explain something to you’
pose. Alan stood back, beside the bar, his cell phone pressed to his ear,
nodding and speaking occasionally into it.
My heart thudded painfully in my chest as someone outside the
camera’s range swung on Zeke, in a flash, out of nowhere, and Zeke went
crashing to the ground out like a light. Silas strode forward into the camera’s
view and then, through the front door, larger than life and screaming at the
top of his lungs. Dancers stopped, patrons stood up, and Alan walked calmly
forward.
I couldn’t hear anything. There was nothing to hear, the
office up here was so well insulated and soundproofed only the dullest thumping
of the music’s bass beat made it through. I swallowed hard as Silas stopped
just outside Alan’s reach and Alan waved him forward with a broad sweep of his
arm.
“What are you doing?” I asked, and realized he was taking
Silas on a tour, either to get him out or to buy time for whoever he had been
on the phone with to get here. I knew Nik would make it. I knew he would be
here, I just didn’t know when, and with how fast and how hard Silas had knocked
Zeke out? I didn’t know if I wanted Nik to square off with him.
I was suddenly very afraid for my lover and biker bodyguard.
I followed Silas and Alan from camera to camera but kept
glancing back to Zeke who was sitting up now and rubbing his jaw. My chest
loosened with a bit of relief at that and I still couldn’t believe that Silas
had gotten the drop on him like that. Zeke was good at his job and I’d seen him
handle himself in more than a few fights before.
The phone in my hand buzzed and I answered it without looking,
“Hello?”
Indistinct club noise came through the line and voices, hard
to make out. I looked at the screen and realized Alan had dialed me.
“What’s up there?” I heard Silas demand.
“My office.”
Shit!
I got up and looked around and finally had to settle for
ducking into his bathroom up here. I stepped into the shower and pulled the
curtain, holding the phone to my chest as I heard the door being messed with
out front.
I held my breath and ended the call, fighting with the phone
to silence the ringer just in case.
“I told you, there’s no one up here,” I heard Alan declare.
“We have no dancer by that name at this club. Now, as I told you downstairs,
the police have been notified about you striking my bouncer. You can clearly
see there is no one up here, so please leave.”
I heard the bathroom door swing wide and bounce against the
wall and the fear swarmed over my skin, sweat standing out along my spine under
the short, light silk robe Alan had gifted me after my first year here. He did
things like that on all of the girls’ anniversaries.
“Fine,” Silas grated. “But I don’t believe you. What is it?
Her night off or something?”
“I swear to you, there’s no ‘Tiffany’ here.” Alan maintained.
“I find out you’re lying to me, I’m coming back here and
burning this place to the fucking ground with you in it.”
Their voices receded and I squeezed my eyes shut, hot tears
tracking down my face. All he’d needed to do to find me had been to pull back
the curtain. He just hadn’t thought to do it. Dumb luck on my part? Who knew?
All I did know was that he was going or gone and I found myself choking on a
silent scream that I would not let out from behind my teeth.
I slid down the wall onto my butt against the cold tile and shuddered,
sweat slick against my palms where I clutched my phone with both of them over
my heart, like it would protect me or something. The blood rushed in my ears
and when the curtain jerked back I screamed and cringed but it was Zeke that
knelt down, a purple knot swelling on his jawline. He put his hands on mine and
said, “Easy, Tiff! Easy it’s just me.”
“Is he gone?” I cried and a hand fell onto Zeke’s shoulder.
Zeke jumped and turned but immediately relaxed and got out of the way of our
boss who knelt down in front of me.
“He’s gone,” Alan assured me.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure, I’m so sorry. I had to get him out of here. You did
great.” He patted my cheek, the side without the mask, and he looked sorry.

In The Series

Melody Beswick thought she was
bringing herself and her thirteen month old son home to his father. It was her
last ditch effort to make a better life for her and her boy. One in which Noah
had a father to look up to and guide him. While she knew Grinder wasn’t perfect,
she believed in him, and love always found a way, right?
Melody never thought her dreams for herself and her son could twist into such
nightmares, and that it was so true, the old adage, that the road to hell is
paved with good intentions. She’s about to find out that another adage is true,
that sometimes it’s better the devil you know, when instead of finding Grinder,
it’s his cold and critical brother Archer at the end of her long drive that she
must contend with.

With no other options, and no place else to go, Melody is about to make a deal
with this devil that she can’t refuse. Who knew it could, quite possibly, be
the best decision she’s ever made?

Rush had always been the brother that was the most up for adventure. Then Grinder died and he realized that it was time to slow down. Fast-forward by a year and more and his older brother Archer had found Mel. Hell, his own twin was with a woman of his own! Rush is starting to get restless again, which was just perfect. Cue a string of anonymous hook-ups and one night stands. It was enough to feed the restlessness for a while, then an adventure of sorts came a callin’ by way of the VP’s estranged aunt and the President’s sister-in-law.
Her daughter was in need of some kind of white knight, which Rush could care less about, but the white knight routine did come with a pretty big perk. It would mean that he got to go back to a job that had, once upon a time, felt like a calling.
Of course, nothing was ever easy where Rush was concerned, especially when he actually set eyes on the damsel in distress. One, she wasn’t some paper princess, and two, she definitely didn’t want him around. After all, one-night hook-ups were supposed to be just that… one and done.

Reckless, dangerous, and out of control; these are the words most often applied to the SHMC’s brother Duracell. Which is why no one can understand what the deal is between him and Blue. Blue is none of those things; if anything he’s quiet, shy, and as mild-mannered as they come. There’s no balance between these two yet they are inexplicably a team. Then Blue gets a single look at Hayley, and it’s all it takes for him to know she’s their third.

Is Hayley the woman for them? A match for Blue sure, but strong enough to withstand the bizarre tempest of Cell’s personality? The two MC brothers have set their sights on the waitress and have been patiently feeling her out. Now it’s time to take the next step and see if she’s indeed able to date the both of them.

She’ll either bring balance to the boys, or Cell’s pull will knock them all off balance and send them crashing, burning them all out before anything can even fully ignite.

“I’ve
loved you since the third grade Amalia Rose Junix. Nothing about that ever
changed and I never thought for a minute you left by any means other than foul
play.” I sighed and she laid her head back down, cuddling close. I could feel
the tension returning to her muscles and I wished I hadn’t said anything now. I
could feel her going back on the defensive and she was always on the defensive.
She may have loved her daddy, but I don’t think her daddy really knew how to
love her back, at least not by traditional standards. Not with all the shit he
put her through.
She came
from the epitome of a fucked-up broken home and the scars from that ran deep.
They were deeper than skin, deeper than blood and bone. These scars weren’t
something that could probably ever be fixed, but I didn’t care. I loved her for
who she was, damage and all, difficult as that sometimes made her.
At least,
with Mali, I would never, ever, be bored.
“No more
secrets, no more games,” she murmured. “Not between us.”
“No
games, no secrets,” I agreed immediately.
“I missed
there even being an ‘us’ so much,” she said and she shivered against me, the
same sort of shudder she gave when we were kids and she was fending off tears.
The same sort of shudder that always led someone to ask ‘are you all right?’
which of course led to Mali blowing up in their face in over-compensation to
prove that she was just fine.
I didn’t
fall for the trap, I just held her a little closer and smoothed my hand up and
down her sexy, toned thigh and said, “Yeah, me too. You have no idea how much.”
She
huffed a bit of an incredulous laugh and I smiled, too. If there were anyone on
the planet who knew or had any idea, yeah, it would be her. I didn’t know
exactly where to go from here. What to say, or if I should ask, and I didn’t
want to ruin this carefully cultivated calm. Seriously. We were safe here, even
though we couldn’t stay here forever, for obvious reasons. We had time, though.
Time before we had to make a move.
“Sleep,
for now, baby. We’ll deal with it tomorrow.”
“Pretty
sure it is tomorrow, and I like that.”
“Like
what?”
“That you
call me ‘baby’ so easy, like you’ve always said it.”
I
chuckled and kissed the crown of her head. If she only knew how many times I
struggled not to say it in the weeks and months leading up to her sudden
disappearance. Or how many hours I searched internet back alleys, how much time
I spent immersed in the dark web muttering over and over, ‘Where are you,
baby?’ into the dark.
Amalia
had been mine for a long, long, time. She just didn’t know it then, and I’d had
no way to tell her.
“You
really like it?” I asked, a little worried by her sudden silence. “You’re not
just saying that?”
She
pushed herself up, twisting to look down at me. Her lips echoing the movement
by twisting into a wry smile that warmed her eyes to a deep caramel.
“I love
it,” she whispered and brought her mouth down to mine for a lingering,
decadent, sweet kiss that had my dick stirring beneath the sheets all over
again. She didn’t hesitate to go exploring, wrapping sure but gentle fingers
around me; stroking me to life the rest of the way.

Zac is looking for a mulligan, a “do over,” with his childhood best friend. The question is: Can Ben find a way to put aside his old hurts and fully open his heart to Zac for a second time? Or maybe the past is something better left buried on the beach where it all began.

“You’ve been movin’ around
this place like some kind of ghost since we got back from the club. It’s
driving me nuts, so how about you tell me what’s up? You having second thoughts
or some shit?”
Melody looked up from where she sat, Indian style in the middle of the bed.
It’d been something like two or three days since we’d been at the club and
she’d been quieter than usual, which she’d practically been a fuckin’ church
mouse to begin with. Her phone forgotten in her hands she opened her mouth to
speak, thought better of it, closed it, opened it again only to turn around and
shut it again.

To make my point that I wasn’t going anywhere until I got some kind of an
answer, I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned a shoulder against the edge
of the open doorway. She leaned way over to get a look around me into the
living room.

“He’s out cold already,” I assured her and she leaned back slowly, resuming her
seated position in the middle of my bed. I’d kept sleeping on the couch,
figuring I’d be back in it soon enough once she and I were married, a couple of
weeks more didn’t make much difference.

She pinned me with those beautiful blue eyes of her and nervously pushed some
of that gorgeous blonde hair of hers behind her ear. Melody damn sure was a
beautiful woman. I was lucky on that score. Even luckier that she was a fine
mother and homemaker. Still, I was getting tired of her looking so rundown and
fuckin’ scared all the time, but I couldn’t fix it if I didn’t know what was
freaking her out so hard.

“I’m scared,” she admitted finally, and it was a start.

“Of what?” I asked, needing to know which dragon to slay would be an even
better starting point, but I could tell by the expression on her face I was
gonna have to drag it out of her. I hated that. Why couldn’t women ever be
straightforward like most dudes? I ask a question, I expect an answer but if
what I suspected were true…

“Of… of you,” she said finally and my suspicions were dead on confirmed. Well,
shit. Now how did I go about fixing that?

“Okay,” I said judiciously. “Why? What am I doing to scare you? Give me some
specifics.”

She smoothed her lips together and I realized I was looking forward to seeing
if they were as soft as they looked. She swallowed hard, and voice trembling,
said, “I don’t know if it’s anything specific…” I snorted and she looked like a
deer caught in the fuckin’ headlights.

“Don’t bullshit me, Mel. I promise not to get pissed off, but you gotta tell
me, else I can’t work on it, or fix it now can I?”

“No, I suppose not,” she said softly and I had to wait her out. I could see her
trying to gather up her thoughts. The slight line that developed between her
eyes as she thought furiously how best to say it, was cute on her.

Still, I didn’t have endless patience so I finally sighed and said, “Just gimme
the short version, and spill it. I gotta try and get some sleep tonight.”

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to… I don’t know if I can…”

“Fuck me?” I asked, the heat lending a sweet blush of color across her cheeks
cluing me in.

“I’ve never done sex without love… You’re attractive, Archer, don’t get me
wrong but I’m a woman and feelings… we have to have feelings as a part of it,
it’s just how it works, I guess…” she covered her face with her hands, “Oh,
god!” She groaned, “I’m saying this all wrong and I don’t want to hurt your
feelings but it’s important and I’m so sorry, but I’m really struggling and the
girls back in Arizona always said you were rough and that scares me too, and I
just am trying to get my head around it and I’m struggling… I’m sorry.” I let
her babble and repeat herself and waited her out until she was finished and
somewhat beyond that.

I could feel the slight smirk on my lips, a defense mechanism if I were being
totally honest, because what she said did sting, but I had to be honest with
myself, it wasn’t totally unexpected. Finally, she gave me what I wanted,
lowering her hands and looking at me.

“First of all, those girls back in AZ? I don’t and didn’t give a fuck about
them, so why would I give a shit? They weren’t mine, and I was just in it to
get my rocks off, meet a physical need, you get me?”

Again with that adorable little thoughtful frown. Mel nodded slowly, and I was
pretty sure she didn’t get what I was saying but I wasn’t too terribly worried
about it, because soon enough she would. I was a ‘doer’ by nature. I didn’t
really dig sitting around talking about shit, the only reason I was indulging
her in it now, was because I thought she was gonna worry herself sick and back
out…

Blurb

Only a madman makes a promise in the heat of passion…

During a midnight tryst in a moonlit garden, Nicolas Needham fell in love—only to walk away. As a younger son with few connections, his pride demanded that he better his circumstances before paying his suit to Lady Mariah. And only a fool believes him….

Mariah Morehaven has lived a quiet, almost reclusive life in the country. While she accepts that marriage is her unavoidable destiny, as a baroness in her own right, and heir to one of the oldest and land-rich estates in England, she fears becoming the target of fortune hunters. Excerpt

NICK FOUND HER on one of the private terraces overlooking the gardens. Alone. Thank God. Dressed in her ivory gown and drenched in soft moonlight, she resembled nothing so much as an ethereal being leaning wistfully over the balustrade.

“Lady Mariah?” he called out softly.

She turned to face him with a look of surprise. “Mr. Needham?”

“I thought to find you with Rochford.”

“Then you were mistaken.”

“Mistaken?” He frowned. “I don’t believe I mistook his interest in you.”

She released a bitter laugh. “His interest is in my estate, perhaps. In my dowry, most certainly. But in me? I assure you not, Mr. Needham.”

“Then he is a fool.”

“No. We are simply from different worlds. That one is his,” she inclined her head to the door, “and this one is mine.”

“Are you not enjoying yourself?”

“To be honest, I feel completely out of my element without Lydia. All too much like a sheep in a cow pasture.”

“You don’t look like a sheep,” he said. “A sprite perhaps, but never a sheep.”

“A sprite?” She laughed. “You told me you weren’t given to false flattery, Mr. Needham.”

His grin instantly faded. “There’s nothing false in my words, Mariah.” Her name slipped all too easily over his tongue. “You have no idea how lovely you are tonight.”

Unable to help himself, he reached out to stroke the curls that lay over her pale shoulder. His gaze followed the cascade of golden-brown locks to where the ends rested just above her milky-white breasts. “In the morning sunshine, I thought you resembled a wood nymph, but by moonlight, you are nothing short of angelic. You should always be out of doors, Mariah.”

“It’s where I prefer to be,” she said. “It’s where I feel most alive—walking, riding, tending the garden. I’ve always despised being stuck inside, but now that’s where I spend most of my waking hours. My only escape is at night when I sit on my own terrace or walk in the gardens.”

“Alone?” he asked, his gaze searching hers. Was he mistaken about her? Did she perhaps have a secret lover?

“Yes,” she whispered softly. “Very much . . . alone.”

She suddenly looked so forlorn, making him ache for what he couldn’t have. It was all he could do not to pull her into his arms.

“It would not be so if you were you to marry . . .” The words were out before he could take them back.

“To whom? Someone like Lord Rochford?” she asked, searching his eyes.

“A woman in your position may have her pick of nearly any eligible bachelor in the realm.”

She released a derisive laugh. “And I would still be very much alone. I don’t seek that kind of marriage, Mr. Needham. ‘Tis too beautiful a night to speak of such unpleasant things as marriage.” She tilted her face up toward the heavens, exposing the full column of her beautiful neck. “Do you ever stargaze? Or is such an activity too frivolous for a man of your serious temperament?”

“Yes. As a matter of fact, I have always loved astronomy.”

“I have never learned to identify the constellations, but the myths fascinate me. When you look up there tonight, what do you see?”

“The moon is too bright to see much,” he said. “The best time to view stars is during the new moon.”

“Can you find Cassiopeia for me?”

“She doesn’t emerge in the heavens until autumn, but Ursa Major is best viewed in spring. It’s also the easiest to recognize. Do you know the myth?”

“It is the story of Callisto, is it not?”

“Yes. Zeus was smitten by her, and Hera, his jealous wife, transformed Callisto into a bear. While she was in animal form, her son Arcas was going to shoot her, but Zeus intervened and turned Arcas into a bear as well. He then placed mother and son permanently in the heavens.”

“It seems so unfair that Callisto was punished merely for attracting the attention of Zeus, but then again, maybe she’s happier lighting up the nighttime sky than worrying about unwanted propositions from powerful men.”

“Unwanted propositions?” Her words rang a peal in his ears. “Did Rochford importune you?”

“No. He did not, but he hinted at a proposal of marriage.”

“When?”

“Earlier this evening.”

“How did you answer him?”

“I didn’t. Please, Mr. Needham. I don’t wish to talk about it. Why were you looking for me? Did you receive any news from Lord Marcus?”

“Yes. He anticipates he and Miss Trent will arrive late tonight.”

“What has detained him for so long?”

“He didn’t elaborate. He only said it was a matter of urgency.” She shivered. “You are cold.” He immediately stripped off his coat and laid it over her shoulders.

Her eyes met his. “Thank you, Mr. Needham.”

“Nicolas,” he said. “Or Nick would be even better.”

“Nick,” she repeated with a soft smile. “I like the sound of it. It suits you.”

“And why is that?”

“It’s a no-nonsense kind of name, isn’t it? You don’t seem to care for their disingenuous ways any more than I do. Indeed, you are the only one here with whom I am at ease. It’s hard to believe we met only a few short days ago. I feel as if I have known you so very much longer.”

“Perhaps it’s just the wine?” he suggested.

“No,” she murmured, leaning toward him, close enough for him to catch a teasing hint of lilacs. She licked her lips. The gesture drew his gaze to her luscious rose-colored mouth. He couldn’t help wondering if her lips were as sweet and petal soft as they looked. “It has nothing to do with the wine and everything to do with the man.”

Her tone and demeanor were warm and inviting, and innocently seductive. He was surely courting danger to be alone with her any longer. “We should go back inside and join them at cards,” he said.

“Must we?” she asked, soft and pleading.

“Yes, we must,” he replied resolutely. He’d come looking for her to protect her from Rochford, but who would protect her from him? “If you don’t wish to join them at cards, you could always make an excuse to retire early to your chamber.”

“But I won’t be able to sleep. I’m far too restless. What about you? Do you intend to wait for Lord Marcus and Lydia?”

“Yes.”

“Then I will wait with you,” she said. “That is . . . if you would care for some company.”

“No,” he said. “It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to be together. Indeed, if we stay out here much longer, we will surely become an object of speculation.”

“Would that be so terrible?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” He was half afraid of her answer.

“If my reputation were tarnished, perhaps I would not then be troubled by any more unwanted suitors.”

“You are quite mistaken in me if you think I would do such a thing,” he replied tersely.

She had no idea the torture she was putting him through. What she’d just implied, that she was willing to be compromised, was pushing him perilously close to the breaking point. He was an honorable man, but a man nevertheless—made of flesh and blood.

“I’m sorry.” She bit her lip. “It was a foolish thing to say. But I am no one. Why would anyone bother themselves with me?”

“You don’t understand how it is,” he said. “This world is full of malicious people, Mariah. To those who live meaningless lives, spreading gossip and fomenting scandal is the ultimate in entertainment.”

“I have nothing in common with such people,” she said. “I hate falseness and malice. I’m very sorry I came here.”

“Are you?” he asked softly. “I’m not. If you hadn’t come, I never would have had the delight of getting to know you, and that would have been a tragedy for me.”

“But what does it matter? It’s unlikely that we’ll ever see each other again after tomorrow.”

His gaze narrowed. “After tomorrow?”

“Yes. In the morning, I intend to pack my belongings. I’m returning to Morehaven.”

“You’re leaving?”

“Yes. I am needed at home.”

“But you can’t leave so soon,” he protested. “I promised to teach you about cricket. I could never break my word to a lady. I have my reputation to protect.”

His effort at levity only seemed to annoy her. “Your reputation?” She gave a snort of indignation. “Is that all that matters to you, Mr. Needham? What others think?”

“Not at all,” he replied. “In truth, most of them can go to the devil for all I care.”

“Then why are you afraid to be alone with me?” she asked softly.

“I’m only trying to protect you from those who live to destroy others,” he answered.

His chest squeezed as her gaze grew misty. “I don’t belong here. Don’t you understand? Can you even imagine how it feels to be sought out only because you have property and a fortune? How will I ever know if someone actually cares for me?”

Nick stifled a groan. The anguish in her beautiful blue-green eyes unraveled his last threads of self-restraint. He drew her into his arms, knowing he was making a mistake, maybe the biggest of his life, but the kiss was his fate. It was as inevitable as the rising sun and as unstoppable as the ocean tide.

“How will you know?” He moved in slowly, deliberately, until their faces were mere inches apart, until the sweet sough of her breath caressed his face. He couldn’t hold himself back now if his next breath depended on it. “This is how.”

Cupping her face with both hands, he finally claimed the soft, sweet lips that had tormented him since he’d seen her in Lady Russell’s garden. Her kiss was the tenderest torture. Although unschooled, her lips were indescribably sweet. He wanted to lose himself in the drugging pleasure of them forever. He resisted the urge to probe with his tongue, knowing if he took this any further, he’d never be able to pull away, and he had to. He couldn’t let it go on. One long and lingering kiss was all he would allow himself . . . because anything more could never be enough.
